Mickey7: 1
- Brand: Unbranded
Description
There were tiny little biting things that came in the wind, burrowed into any exposed skin, and brought itching rashes, then pus-filled blisters, then sepsis, then death. There is being a lab experiment, there is repairing things in a radioactive environment, no one wants to be your friend because you are going to die, everyone thinks you must have been an convict on death row and been drafted for the job because who would volunteer to suffer long, slow, agonizing deaths, over and over and over. A multilayered, wildly entertaining story…Ashton is a talented storyteller and MICKEY7 has something for everyone while also putting a fresh spin on the idea of clones. Meanwhile, there are numerous problems arising on the planet, primarily lack of resources, and the threat if curious monster bugs.
In some ways, this book reminded me of Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (one of my favourite reads of 2021). It would take a hell of an effort and a great deal of personal risk to get you back out—and I can’t justify that kind of risk for an Expendable, you know? IF, that is, David Zaslav's flensing knife spares the project now that Plan B Entertainment's new home Warner Brothers is owned by his philistine self. It’s a good story and I enjoyed it, so will get the next in the series - in fact I’m looking forward to it! The living expendable uploads their data as often as possible, a full map of their mind – memory, hopes, dreams, attachments. His job is as bad it sounds: he’s an employee who’s destined to die time and again – sometimes for science, sometimes from accidents, and sometimes just when he’s devoured by centipede-like creatures – and then will be brought back as new version of himself that will hopefully have most of his recent memory intact. The beginning reminded me a little of Andy Weir in tone and my mind was heading in the direction of Project Hail Mary, just set on a planet.
Officially I am an executive producer, but my belief is that probably that's entirely a symbolic title. Although Mickey was not alone on the planet, Mickey7 does have The Martian feel with sharp and witty dialog.Mickey’s job title is exactly what it sounds like—every time there’s a mission too dangerous, they send him in, and if he dies, they’ll simply regenerate a new clone of him, with his memories mostly intact.
