To celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Bank of England in 1994, the Royal Mint decided to issue, among others, this two-pound gold coin. Between November 2008 and 2009, 136,000,000 20p pieces were minted with the diademed bust of Queen Elizabeth on the right and the legend ELIZABETH-II-D-G-REG-F-D-2008 on a seven-sided die. On the reverse side, the Royal Coat of Arms appears with an off-centre effect, and the legend on the right side conveys the facial value in letters –“ TWENTY PENCE“. They were the so-called 20p “ Royal Shield of Arms“. Prices may be incomplete or entirely inaccurate due to the wild variation in coin conditions and selling prices. According to various sources, between 50,000 and 250,000 of the 136 million pieces minted appear without the date on the front. The explanation for this is that the previous obverse of the 20p coin depicting “The Tudor Rose” was used by mistake. The date (2008) was shown on the reverse, so the coin was not dated. Another very rare 50p coin is the London 2012 Watersports Games 50p coin variant, showing a swimmer underwater. In 2022, over 29 million 50p coins were released into circulation, including three new 50 pence designs celebrating Pride, Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee and a Queen Elizabeth Memorial 50p commemorating her reign. A new monarch means a new obverse for our coins, and a new effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings, will feature on future 50 pence coins alongside a special coronation 50p featuring a crowned version of His Majesty’s effigy in honour of such an occasion.Below shows the mintage figures for the calendar year of 2022, providing the only official guide to the rarest coins in circulation. Coined by the Royal Mint after World War I (1914-1918) and with a face value of one pound, the weight of this British coin is 7.98 grams, diameter 22 mm and purity 0.9167. The obverse shows King George V on the left with the legend GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT:OMN:REX F.D.IND:IMP: and on the reverse, St. George and the Dragon and the date 1917. Released in 2009 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of London’s Kew Gardens, only 210,000 of these 50p pieces were ever issued into circulation, making it a rare coin to turn up in change. As the mintage numbers were so low, many collectors removed the coins from circulation when found. In 2019, a newer, commemorative edition of this coin was released as part of the 50 Years of the 50p British Culture Set.
