At first I thought Vefa Alexiandou used a ghost writer for this encyclopedic tome, given her warm & down to earth persona on Greek TV programs, then in reading through it I found she has a chemistry degree , which explains the concise & accurate recipes & analytical overview of the history of Greek cuisine. Much like Child’s analytical approach to French cooking; this is an overview of the food & history of a nation. Also included is a chapter on Greek wines and Spirit pairings that bring all the Greek flavors to life. This cookbook includes recipes from the entire Mediterranean region including Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Each of them approach Greek cuisine with their own unique style making it accessible in their recipes and stories.With fresh takes on her older recipes and riffs off of traditional Greek cuisine, My Greek Table is Diane Kochilas love letter to her family. The recipes are not just greek however. Many come from other mediterranean or middle eastern countries. We tried a few recipes for our cookbook club and i wasn’t particularly impressed by any.
