Description

It is essentially zone-focusing by another name. If you choose, say 1.5m and f8, the instant you squeeze the shutter, everything from about 1m to 5m will be in acceptably sharp focus. The GR lens with a new lens construction was developed for even better image quality. This lens uses a slim optical system with six elements in four groups while maintaining the 18.3 mm (35 mm format equivalent: 28 mm) focal length and brightness of F2.8. High-refractive index, low dispersion glass and aspherical high-precision molded glass lenses are optimally placed in the lens construction to suppress distortion and chromatic aberration to the absolute limit, delivering a high level of sharpness. This results in images that are sharp and clear across the entire frame even from the widest aperture setting.

Personally, I haven’t had any overheating issues and that includes times when another camera shut down because of the heat. Prior to buying the GRIII, I tried it on a Ricoh photowalk, run by Clifton Cameras – this was on a very sunny, hot day and due to the amount of people (over 20), the small amount of test cameras were being used by more intensively than in normal conditions and there were zero issues. Ricoh has offered a variety of adapters, over the years, to change the ‘fixed’ focal lengths of several of their cameras – or modules – to wider or longer focal lengths ..so you’re – probably – not ‘fixed’ at 28mm, or 40mm. I will keep this short. As with all modern sensors, the image quality out of the Ricoh GRIII is excellent. Where the little Ricoh stands out from the crowd is the perfect marriage of a sharp lens with a stabilized 24 MP APS-C size sensor, with no anti-aliasing filter. The GR IIIx provides in-body RAW-data development, while allowing the user to edit a captured image as desired by adjusting such parameters as recoding size, aspect ratio, white balance, Image Control setting, and exposure compensation factor, all without the need of a PC. Since the camera reduces the time required for preview after the user adjusts the parameters of RAW-format images, it enhances the speed of in-body RAW-data development. The camera also lets the user retain the adjusted parameters after the initial RAW-data development is completed, making it possible to make minute re-adjustment of the already-developed image with greater efficiency. The camera’s image quality adjustment function for JPEG images is also upgraded: a newly added monochrome mode allows more minute adjustment of parameters in full-color images, such as filter effect, toning, contrast and sharpness, to create monochrome images with the desired finishing touches. The camera also provides such creative tools as a choice of aspect ratio (16:9 or 4:3)* and image rotation in 0.1-degree steps* to facilitate the image editing process. The X2 36mm lens is not far from the Ricoh 40mm lens, just a tad wider. I prefer the old CCD small sensor of the GRD4 to the aps-c sensor of the 16MP GR.

These trappings all but mirror the previous GR III, including under the hood with the same 24-megapixel APS-C sensor. The biggest change is in the lens, where Ricoh gave people the ability to get closer to subjects through the 40mm equivalent f/2.8 fixed lens. Street photographers will probably prefer this focal length for a number of reasons, but it’s applicable to any type of shooter looking for a happy medium when 28mm is too wide and 50mm is too tight.

If you don't like composing your photos by holding the camera at arms length and looking at the LCD screen, there's also another way of framing I actually believe, that the main reason for the current popularity of film photography, is that the photographer has to learn a few simple rules about the relationships between aperture, shutter speed and ISO, along with the creative part i.e. the decision on where to stand and when to press the button is all that is needed from a camera. P.S. Whilst I am certainly guilty of becoming a fanboy of whichever new camera I own, I have never written a camera review, so this will be my first. I‘ve had my GR III for only three weeks, so I will leave this post open and update it over time. TOKYO, September 8, 2021-RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. is pleased to announce the launch of the RICOH GR IIIx. This high-end digital compact camera features a newly developed GR lens with a 40mm angle of view in the 35mm format, while harmonizing professional-grade image quality with a compact, lightweight body perfect for street photography.

The Ricoh GR III is a compact 24MP APS-C format camera with a 28mm equivalent F2.8 lens. The third in a series of APS-C 'GR' compacts from Ricoh, the GR III has been a long time coming, but updates the GR II in some highly significant ways. Several Ricoh representatives have described the GR III to us as a 'labor of love' - keep reading to find out whether the work of the company's engineers has paid off. Key specifications:

The electronic leveler is a neat feature that helps to ensure level shots while viewing through the LCD monitor, both in landscape and portrait mode. You can The Full Press Snap option takes a photo at one of the Snap mode distances with a full press of the shutter button. This means that you can use both the camera's auto-focus system by half-pressing the shutter button, and over-ride it to instantly shoot at at a pre-determined distance without having to wait for the camera to focus. The RICOH GR IIIx has been developed in response to user requests for a new GR-series camera that will add a new perspective to the highly acclaimed RICOH GR III. The GR III was released in March 2019, featuring a 28mm wide-angle lens and designed to further enhance the essential values of the GR-series: optimizing image quality, snapshot capabilities and portability. The newly designed 26.1mm GR lens provides a 40mm angle of view in the 35mm format, close to the photographer’s own effective field of view. Depending on the way the lens is used, this versatile angle of view can create different image renditions: you can capture an image similar to those taken at a 30mm semi-wide angle, or create a completely different visual expression as if taken at a 50mm standard angle. The camera also provides a range of new and upgraded post-shooting functions to edit captured images to the photographer’s preference.

This camera is capable of producing gorgeous, highly detailed images. The 24mp sensor allows for some cropping latitude, and there is also a 35mm in-camera crop setting, which gives you a 35mm field of view at the expense of a third of the megapixels in the file. The RICOH GR III Street Edition, a high-grade digital compact camera that doesn’t include the viewfinder and the strap, is also scheduled to be launched in the autumn of 2020. Pricing and Availability The GR III also has a built-in ND filter worth two stops (ND 0.6), which can be set to Auto, On or Off. It's quite a useful feature that allows you to shoot with a wide-open aperture in bright sunlight and still get a correctly exposed shot, or for helping to blur moving subjects such as water, or for extending longer exposures. Ricoh didn’t change the menu system, leaving familiar settings where they should be. For newbies to the GR series, the layout isn’t too difficult to grasp, though it’s worth taking time to not only know where everything is, as well as what it’s trying to do.The GR III features a hybrid AF system combining a contrast-type AF mechanism superior in focusing precision with a phase-detection-type AF mechanism assuring high-speed focusing operation. Taking advantage of both mechanisms, it assures faster, more responsive autofocus operation. The GA-2 Lens Adapter – an optional accessory designed exclusively for the GR IIIx – is required to install this lens on the GR IIIx. Big sensor compact cameras are a special breed. In most cases, they are riddled with compromises which the end user ends up hating, or embracing. It is a love-hate relationship. I dipped my toes into this world at a time when the Apple iPhones and Google Pixels were making big waves in the area of photography.
