So it’s equally cringeworthy (the comment above about Uriah Heap is so true) but also very revealing in that he devotes more space to his pedal set up to telling us anything about his children. There are moments in the book when you feel he has obviously self edited to avoid getting into discussing situations that could easily open up the floodgates of negativity.

He is really open about his anxieties and insecurities, which for a "rock" memoir, was really refreshing (a world away from Alex James' approach which was almost the polar opposite). The Blur years are very unsatisfying, with big chunks missing - he was also quite mean spirited towards Damon, I felt, if not very bitter. Having been heavily influenced by Graham both as a musician, and as a person, I could not wait to read this book.Graham has already admitted many times in the past that his alcoholism has impacted his relationships with Blur members and romantic partners, (something which was reiterated several times again in the book), and he has worked through these steps as part of his recovery process. You won’t learn too much more about Blur and the songs, but you will get to know Graham a little better. As Blur bossed the 90s, and Damon Albarn’s bouncy songs about Englishness came to exemplify Britpop, Graham Coxon could usually be found scowling at the back of the band’s group shots. At its best when detailing Coxon’s approach to the creative process, and his discovery of a new confidence in his post-Blur solo albums and soundtrack work. Blur’s loud indie-rock heart, uncomfortable in the limelight, but superb in his crafting of memorable and often anthemic musical moments.

Help reaches back to those early days of Blur, the intricate professionalism of the four-piece understood with clarity and a respectful amount of detail shone on Damon Albarn, Dave Rowntree and Alex James.Quite a few people from all sides got involved in the situation, except the person responsible for the festivities.

Especially if you don't drop the book at this point and read a little further, where there are several statements about how all the women in his life were mentally unstable.I’d heard a few of his solo albums, and the idea in my head of him was of the punk / sci-fi obsessed / comic book aficionado version. Some tend to find those who struggle with fame as ungrateful and entitled, but Coxon manages to compassionately display the difficulties of fame in the 90s and how a passion turns into a business. Before the noise and clamour of the Britpop era, Coxon was a shy Army kid tempering his anxiety through painting and a growing love of music.

An interesting read, although at times veering strongly into areas of Graham’s fixations, which are not as entertaining for the reader. While I never had the worst of Coxon's life by any stretch, I find something relatable in his lack of confidence and admirable in the fact that he's working on it. Written with the journalist Rob Young – author of Electric Eden, a primer on British folk music’s transporting qualities – Coxon’s memoir does not reveal anything very new about a much-catalogued era. It appears some reviewers, here and elsewhere, are disappointed that the book does not 'reveal the truth' behind the Blur break up, or more about his love life. Born in Germany, Coxon also moved around bases, living the kind of unsupervised 1970s childhood full of sharp edges and casual violence that seems heart-rending now.
