Description

Kaul Sen passes away shortly after the events of Jade City. Just before his funeral, thief Bero and his partner Mudt steal jade from Kaul Lan's grave. Hilo struggles to maintain his power as the Pillar of No Peak and enters an uneasy truce with the Mountain. Outside of Kekon, war is waged between Shotar and Ygutan over the disputed Oortoko region of Shotar. Kekon's ally Espenia supports Shotar. Many Kekonese are ambivalent due to Shotar's colonization of Kekon prior to the Many Nation's War. Living Lie Detector: One of Ayt Mada's enforcers is known for his extremely sensitive Perception, and has a reputation as being one of these. Crime and gangster type of stories is usually set in a very male-dominated society but the girlbosses women of this series were portrayed to have just the same (if not more) amounts of conscientiousness, passion, perseverance, diligence, and (sometimes) cruelty as their male counterparts without feeling the need to outright say it. Even then, it was able to show the expectations of being a woman in modern society, in both the No Peak and Mountain clans *wink*

[...] The man I call my father, the one to whom I owe everything—he forced my hand. Before his body was cold, I had to kill his closest comrades—Green Bones I valued and respected—for the position that should have been mine without question. With his dying breath my father could have prevented bloodshed, but he didn’t. Such is the cowardice and shortsightedness of even the most well-meaning of men. I’ve offered you an opportunity that you’ve spurned. Don’t worry, you naive and idealistic girl, I won’t kill you now. I want you to remember, when you see your brother’s jade torn from his mangled body, when your clan lies in ashes, that you could have prevented it but didn’t. You forced my hand. You’ll remember." Jade War was nominated for the Dragon Award for Best Fantasy Novel, the Aurora Award for Best Novel, the Ignyte Award for Best Novel - Adult, and the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] Adaptations [ edit ] All that mortals could do was accept the lot they were given, and yet still fight to better their own fate and that of their loved ones.” Hufflepuff House: There are some 15 clans in Kekon, but you wouldn't know it from the amount of screen-time they get in the novels.

The Making of Jade War & Bonus Content

Seko, the Mountain Fist who had worked with Mudt's gang, manages to cut his throat with a plain knife rather than give up any information to Maik Tar. There were so many things a Pillar could not accomplish solely with his own will and strength, that relied instead on other people, even in matters as personal as vengeance.” Niko physically resembles Lan, has his characteristic narrowed eye when he's pondering something, and unfortunately seems to inherit his uncertainty in himself and questioning of his place among the family.

It Runs in the Family: Anden fears that he'll end up like his late mother, who people call "The Mad Witch" because she fell prey to the Itches. Cruel Mercy: The ultimate fate of Ayt Madashi. Niko's first decision as Pillar is that she will live out the remainder of her life in exile, powerless and without jade, to be remembered by history only as a tyrant who betrayed everything it meant to be a Green Bone, while other people accomplish her dreams of a united Kekon without her. The clan was not just people and jade and money. It was an idea, a legacy that connected the pats with the present and the future. The family’s strength was a promise.” For the uninitiated, here are the basics: The three books in the series ( Jade City, Jade War and Jade Legacy, the newest) exist, essentially, to tell the tale of the Kaul family of No Peak Clan and, specifically, of Kaul Hilo, his sister Shae, and their extended families. It begins when Hilo is young — just an arrogant, powerful, Green Bone street soldier in his family's criminal empire on the imaginary island nation of Kekon — and follows him through triumph and tragedy (mostly tragedy), across a 20-year war with the family's rivals, the Mountain Clan.

Genre Mashup: The most commonly used elevator pitch used when reviewers talk about the novel is " The Godfather, but with magic and kung fu." These are flawed characters that are fighting against those flaws, and it's extremely entertaining to watch them progress through this story and interact with each other, and the side characters of this book. Even the side characters are well done, including the rival family which doesn't end up feeling like a "good vs. evil" storyline, which I appreciated from this author. Asshole Victim: There are some truly despicable individuals who buy the farm in this story. None of whom will be missed.

If you have read my review of book 1, you would know that I liked it but had some criticism and things that I said could be improved. And few things can make me happy as seeing authors improve as if they listened to my advice! (Don’t get this wrong, I am not saying that the author listened to me, she has great readers who helped her but it felt like so). Jade McGlynn, Memory Makers: The Politics of the Past in Putin’s Russia, Bloomsbury Press -forthcoming June 2023. https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/memory-makers-9781350280762/ The plot in the book is interesting too. I felt my heart racing in anticipation a few times while reading this and that is great. There is a cool duel that left me on my tiptoe and many surprised along the way that I think you should experience for yourselves.Kekon's clans are powerful. They are the mafia with a sense of national duty, yakuza gone legit and multinational, with skyscrapers and schools and seats on charity garden club boards. They do crimes like it's going out of style. They burn and murder and wage bloody war in the streets. But they're also the recognized power that holds Kekon together and defends the island against its many, many enemies.

Jade City by Fonda Lee is the first book in the Green Bone saga. It’s been hailed as ‘Godfather-esque’, with a healthy mix of Asian inspired fantasy and Kung Fu. Well, hello! You have my interest, and yes I think I need this book in my life now! I’m so ecstatic to say that the book lived up to this description, as all these elements shone through beautifully in the narrative. I wouldn’t describe this book as fast paced, but it really doesn’t need to be. At no point did I feel the story lagged or became boring, because the Asian cultural details, which included honour and respect, the hierarchy of the clans, and the family structures were undoubtedly captivating. Lee’s writing is truly exceptional throughout; each chapter played out like a scene from a gangster film in my head. I could picture everything so vividly, and some scenes had a real sultry atmospheric feel to them.Better Than Jade. Before they were married, Kaul Hilo and Maik Wen were a young couple facing long odds: the son of a top Green Bone clan in love with a stone-eye girl from a disreputable family. Jade City is set in Janloon, the capital city of Kekon. It’s a city where jade is predominantly mined and traded. Two clans – No Peak, run by the Kaul family, and Mountain, run by the Ayts – not only control the city but also monopolise the jade industry. There is much rivalry between these clans and both are on the brink of war. Of course there are so many more layers to this story, so much history and conflict, but the beauty of this book is to discover it all as you read, so my lips are sealed. Many of you may know that Jade City is my favourite book of all time. And not just ‘one of my favourite books’ – Jade City is the favourite book. And now I find myself in the strange and unexpected position of finding a new favourite book of all time. I have loved Jade City so passionately for years that I never gave thought to the possibility that it would be dethroned so soon. It’s not often you read a book where the second book, the middle book of a trilogy no less, is undoubtedly better than the first book, and yet, Fonda Lee did it. Jade War, the sequel to Jade City, has dethroned its predecessor as my favourite book of all time. Jade War is more brutal, more devastating, more emotional, and more than you could ever expect it to be.
