Description

The TCL RC630K sports an Onkyo sound system based around a pair of downward-firing full-range speakers, each of which has 10W of built-in amplification. The sound quality is surprisingly good considering the TV’s dimensions and screen size, with a clean delivery and some nice detail. The result is that the 6-Series is more closer akin to OLED in terms of brightness and contrast, but has the benefit of using quantum dots, like last year, which means you’ll see a Wide Color Gamut that looks amazing. Read How to buy a soundbar that meets your needs? (guide) and Five tips for better TV sound – Dolby Atmos for beginners (guide) We are a little disappointed that while it has 3 HDMI ports, none fully implement the 2.1 4K@100Hz standards. Gamers – not really It claims 6000:1, which we think is a ‘stretch target’. Still, for the price, the VA panel is more contrasty than Edge-lit IPS panels.

The TCL RC630K has a couple of strengths that make it a solid TV for gaming. First of all, the input lag in Game mode is an extremely low 10ms, which is comparable with the best gaming TVs. Secondly, there’s no danger of image retention or screen burn-in with the LCD panel. As far as those limitations go, the biggest is obviously the peak brightness, with the RC630K limited to 400cd/m2 on both a 10% window and a full-field pattern, regardless of which mode you select. As a result, you’re better off choosing the more accurate Dark HDR mode, and simply selecting the highest brightness setting. Because there’s still a dearth of 4K/ HDR content out there the 6-Series still relies really heavily on its AiPQ Engine to transform HD to 4K content. It does this using three algorithms – one for color, one for clarity and one for contrast – and the results, so far, do seem better than last year. What you have to remember is that at this price, all Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos (DA) claims are just about being able to decode the metadata and downmix to the panel and speaker capability. They won’t give you some mythical, marvellous DV/DA experience reserved for top-grade LG OLEDs and some mini-LEDs. In fact, ignore the DV/DA claim! Motion smoothing – Technical Fail but Passable Edge-Lit is what 90% of consumers buy because they are cheap. These may claim DV but what you see is only about 20-30% of OLED HDR. With this feature, all you have to do is say “Ok Google” into the remote control or your voice assistant of choice (Siri or Alexa), and then search for what you want on your screen! To get things started: go into Settings > Search & Assistant > Voice Control > On-Screen Remote Control and toggle it on.

Subtitles and audio description information displayed on electronic programme guide more info panel OLED is the undisputed king of TV/Movies. It decodes Dolby Vision (DV)/IQ and gives close to 100% HDR/10/+/DV (high dynamic range) results. Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying a live scene and white square taking up 10% of the screen (measured in Nits)

Features

The TCL RC630K supports every version of HDR – HDR10, HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma), HDR10+, and Dolby Vision, which is very welcome at this price point. It means never having to compromise, no matter which version a specific source is using, and the dynamic metadata in HDR10+ and Dolby Vision allows the TV to transcend its inherent limitations when tone-mapping HDR content. Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying small white square taking up 60% of the screen (measured in Nits) All this means is when the TV encounters Dolby Vision and Atmos (DA) metadata, it decodes the 128 channels to the TV’s two channels. You do not get 3D spatial height or surround – just a slightly wider sound stage. If you want the full DA effect, you need a DA soundbar. We will be testing the TCL 8132 3.1.2 DA soundbar separately, but hint; you need a soundbar to enjoy clear and immersive sound from this TV. In game mode, the G-t-G response is 15ms, and the HDMI 2.1 port is only 4K@50Hz or 2K@100Hz. Voice control – Pass+

a winner for those on a tight budget (TV review) - Cybershack

On the left there’s a choice of Freeview Play, streaming channels and the settings menu, plus a search function and the ability to save custom lists. Over on the right you can access any connected devices and live TV, along with all the apps. There’s sufficient processing power to ensure the Roku platform is responsive, but it’s also intuitive to use and easy to navigate. The sound on the TCL 6-Series is perfectly acceptable. You won't hear the fine details in classical music or the spacious soundstage of a 5.1 surround system, but you won't have any complaints about the volume level either. Percentage luminance drop at 35 degree horizontal angle from the centre of the screen with 100% white output Motion handling is also good, given the inherent limitations of LCD as a display technology and the panel’s 60Hz refresh rate. As a result, there’s some blurring on fast motion like sport, but the RC630K handles 24p content without introducing judder, allowing movies to retain a film-like quality. The visible threshold for any DeltaE is 3, so the RC630K is certainly in the ballpark, but given there are no real calibration controls it’s impossible to get it any more accurate. Thankfully, the resulting picture is very watchable, with natural-looking colours, and some decent shadow detail. It has Vivid/Low Power/Smart HDR/Sports/Movie/Game modes. You need to use Vivid for most typical Australian lounge rooms, and our tests are based on that. Primary colours are good Secondary colours (tones) are limited to about 60% of the gamut Direct LED (see below for details). These may decode DV with the result that is closer to 40-50% of OLED HDR Speaking of the legs, one neat addition this year is the ability to weave cables through the legs themselves, creating a less chaotic space free from wires. It has Standard/Movie/Music/Voice/Game/Sports/Dynamic pre-sets, and a bass enhancer has On/Low/Middle/High pre-sets. Dynamic is probably best for general TV viewing, but they make little difference overall. The overall volume is 82dB – plenty loud enough.
