Description

From round 2 onwards the opposing team gets the chance to guess your code before your own team does. There are plenty of great clues to communicate to your teammates – who can also read the keywords – but the clever part is coming up with clues that will make it difficult for the message to be stolen. I really like what this expansion brings to the base game as it forces you to think about your clues in a different way, rather than just simply coming up with synonyms for your words, for example.

And if you are one of those players who was disappointed when you found out you didn't always get a chance to guess the other teams actual words, this is a exactly what you are looking for. When you place the word in the Decrypto panel, the word is revealed, each secret word when placed in the panel will have a accordioning number from one to four which will be used as part of a code.

That is – the clues have to refer to the meaning of the keywords (because otherwise it would be impossible for your opponents to try to steal them.

The only hurdle is explaining how it works, because there's a lot going on simultaneously and as one of my friends said last night "there is a lot of writing". Now, the other team gives clues for their set of words, and the guesses are scored in the same manner. The more clues you get throughout the course of the game, the better you’ll be able to infer which number a certain clue may refer to. It could be simplified for younger kids with a bit of help (we are thinking of working at it with our 5 year old as she loves reading and writing) but it might be a slower and more obvious game for the adults. One player will take a card with the 3 digit code (a combination of the 4 numbers on the code screen); they will need to give their teammates a coded message so they can figure out what the 3 digit number may be.

At higher player counts, you just kind of have more … noise, and there’s less for an individual player to do. If you’re looking for a fun and smart game for a group of 4-8 folks, this is a game I would highly recommend. I had noticed the increasing mentions about the rise of fascism in other countries (1930's) as the show went on, with the usual talk of not needing to worry about it. If you are one of those people who actually reads all the way though the rules before playing, you will come across the recommendation that you DON'T shuffle the clue cards. What really separates this from your every day party game is that once you move to the next round, each team then gives clues so the opposing team may try to guess. But as the game progresses, if your clues all fall into similar categories, the opposing team can begin to guess which clue corresponds to which word. But I’m sure you can also see that Decrypto is one of the most monochrome things we’ve been excited about since… since Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space. You have a series of words that only your team knows, and you rotate being the clue-giver, wherein you have to give clues that correspond to three of your four words.
