It had a unique, brilliantly crafted and intricate story-line. This was my second book by Keigo Higashino, after Devotion of Suspect X that I absolutely loved. One thing I noticed in his books that make them exceptional is that the mystery is not about who committed the crime but rather, how the crime was committed and the possible motivation behind it.

Journey Under the Midnight Sun - Medium Journey Under the Midnight Sun - Medium

This book starts off with the finding of a murdered man. The killer is not found. Thereafter it moves forward in time, exploring the development of the murdered man's son and his mistress's daughter. It does so through the eyes of other characters, including the detective that investigated the initial case, through a number of side stories. The most amazing part of this book is not the plot itself! Instead, try concentrating on the details that Higashino-sensei gave you (e.g., what kind of books did the officer saw when he entered the boy's room for the first time at the beginning of the fiction?) and you would be able to solve many quizzes that were not revealed by the author... The story begins in 1973, with the death of an Osakan pawnbroker, Yosuke Kirihara, under strange circumstances. The investigation, headed by officer Junzo Sasagaki, gradually uncovers Fumiyo Nishimoto, a mother struggling to make ends meet and one of his customers, and her boyfriend Tadao Terasaki, as prime suspects. However, the Osakan police are unable to definitely prove their involvement, and both are eventually found dead; Fumiyo dies in an accidental gas leak in her house, and Terasaki dies in a traffic accident. The story primarily concerns itself with the effects of this incident on two people: Ryoji Kirihara, the pawnbroker's son, and Yukiho Nishimoto, Fumiyo's daughter. The novel avoids directly revealing the two's thoughts to the reader, instead preferring to reveal information second-hand through the viewpoints of multiple other supporting characters whose lives intersect to form a complete picture of the story's events. Many of the reviewers here have talked about the disappointing ending to this novel, and while I agree, I don't think UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN is meant to be read as a traditional mystery, ending in all the suspects gathered in the drawing room waiting to hear the great detective's conclusions. To me it was a fascinating look at the passage of time, and how people move through different chapters of their lives. Like THE DEVOTION OF SUSPECT X, it's not really a whodunit or a whydunit: it's more like glimpses of people's lives over time, the way we really see our friends and acquaintances -- with imperfect knowledge, in only one context, and always from the outside looking in. The story opens in 1973 with the death of a pawnshop owner. The detective Sasagaki acquaints with the victim’s young son Ryo and crosses paths with a beautiful young girl Yukiho. Sasagaki suspects a connection between Ryo, Yukiho and the victim’s murder but without any concrete evidence, the murder becomes another cold case that is buried by time. The novel begins in Osaka in 1973 when a man is found stabbed to death in an abandoned building. Detective Sasagaki, the lead officer investigating the case, follows several leads and meets two young children: Ryo, the son of the murdered man, and Yukiho, the daughter of one of the murdered man's acquaintances. Ultimately, Sasagaki is unable to solve the murder. The remainder of the novel is spread over the course of nineteen years. Structurally, the novel may seem like a series of short stories at first. Each chapter introduces and goes into the mind of a new character. However, every character is somehow linked to either Ryo or Yukiho and unusually strange crimes continue to occur.

In the same way, all of our lives have a day and night. But it's not set like it is with the sun. Some people walk forever in the sunlight, and some people have to walk through the darkest night their whole lives. When people talk about being afraid, what they're afraid of is that their sun will set. That the light they love will fade.” Sorry about the rambling. Now, I wouldn’t like to take up any more of your time. Please enjoy the read. What? You are having doubts about reading the book? Are you crazy? This is an essential read! Keigo Higashino ( 東野 圭吾) is one of the most popular and biggest selling fiction authors in Japan—as well known as James Patterson, Dean Koontz or Tom Clancy are in the USA. that the decline in reading among children was largely the fault of their parents. Parents these days don't read books, themselves, but they feel they should make their children read. Since they aren't readers, however, they have no idea what to give their children. That's why they cling to the recommendations from the Ministry of Education. Those books are all insufferably boring and, as a result, the kids learn to hate books. It's a vicious cycle with no end in sight.”My complaint about this book is that the translation seems so sanitized that the story could have happened in any country. Yes, the places and names are Japanese, but there is very little Japanese character or culture that comes through. You know how the sun rises and sets at a certain time each day? In the same way, all of our lives have a day and night. But it’s not set like it is with the sun. Some people walk forever in the sunlight, and some people have to walk through the darkest night their whole lives. When people talk about being afraid, what they’re afraid of is that their sun will set. That the light they love will fade.”

Journey under the midnight Sun is mixture of obsession, voyeurism, love, trust, betrayal and has been narrated so vividly. Just imagine all the parameters combined with mystery what would be the impact. The side stories serve to help you build up an idea of the personalities of the two main characters, but are not necessily very interesting in themselves.
