Maanzecorian's avatar had a vast array of magic at their disposal. It could cast domination, hypnotism, hypnotic pattern, rainbow pattern, and power word stun three times per day. Once per day he could create a disjuncton, screen, or call down a weird on a nearby group of creatures. [6] Possessions [ ] Though Vecna's control of the Mind Flayer's hive mind made him powerful, the two-way nature of the psychic connection was also a point of vulnerability. Any pain felt by the connected entities was shared amongst them; the physical suffering of his thralls would translate to every other being in the hive mind, including Vecna himself. This made the hive mind a prime target for his enemies. When problems arose or the mind flayers wished to discover some secret, they formed "inquisitions", a team of mind flayers, not unlike an adventuring party. Each mind flayer used its own talents and abilities to achieve the inquisition's goal. If a situation was too large for just an inquisition to handle, the mind flayer community put together a "cult". A cult was much larger than an inquisition and was spearheaded by two mind flayers who constantly vied for greater power within it. [4] This type of mission, which put mind flayers temporarily out of reach from the elder brain, was regarded as dangerous but highly profitable if successful. [2]

Sometime in the mid‒14 th century DR, Maanzecorian was believed to have been killed by Tenebrous, a shadowy manifestation of Orcus, after his defeat at the hands of Kiaransalee. [3] [19] Upon discovering that Maanzecorian, being a deity of secrets, knew information that could lead to the location of the Wand of Orcus, Tenebrous ripped that knowledge from Maanzecorian's mind before uttering the Last Word, destroying the deity's essence. His realm of Rictus boiled away along with him, [3] and whatever remained had been crumbling to pieces without its deity. [20] Maanzecorian appeared as a 10‑foot-tall (3‑meter) illithid with purple-green skin and yellowed tusks on the sides of his tentacles. [6] Personality [ ] Pen’serre, a small illithid settlement roughly translated as "Place of Contemplative Study" busily analyzed the ramifications of Maanzecorian's death both on its own and for their race specifically around the mid-13 th century DR. As part of their studies, the Awaiter Creed illithids sought to locate, retrieve, and preserve the remains of the Philosoflayer's library, a challenging task given that it was raided upon his death by various factions, scattering the contents across the multiverse. [11] History [ ]A year later, in 1985, despite being freed from the Mind Flayer, he left a huge impact on Will as he could still sense the Mind Flayer's presence whenever he was close. Nevertheless, The Mind Flayer did not seem to remember Will, or harbor any resentment toward him. However, the piece of the Mind Flayer that possessed Will constructed a body for himself out of rats and the Flayed so he could kill Will and his friends as revenge for the events in 1984. However, his plans were thwarted when Joyce Byers closed the Gate, killing the Mind Flayer's proxy body. The entity was discovered by Henry Creel between 1979 and 1983, following Henry's banishment to Dimension X. This version of the Mind Flayer was a storm-like mass of shadowy particles, or mist; it is not known if the mist possessed its own independent will, or consciousness, though it was certainly a living organism. [2] [3] Henry used his powers to reconstitute the mist into a form that satisfied him: a giant, spider-like entity with a flame-shaped head, not unlike a similar fantasy creature he had imagined as a child. Like his superior Ilsensine, the vain Philosoflayer believed the illithids to be the natural rulers of all planes and worlds and born dominators of all other races, those lesser breeds fit only to be their food and slaves. [6] [10] However, the sagacious deity also considered that there were valuable things to be learned from other minds before consumption, the act of devouring brains a delight made all the sweeter if looked forward to and indulged in later on. There is a great deal of action from here on out with the creatures pursuing various groups of characters through the tunnels beneath the pumpkin patches, through the lab and so forth. Bob is tragically killed right in front of Joyce. A silver crown levitated above Maanzecorian's head with a gem of brightness embedded inside, though the light had no ill effects on illithids.
