Another customer is using the 60-litre blue plastic drums during open canoe expeditions in the UK and Europe whilst working with young people on personal development. Specifically, the drums are used to store equipment in the canoe and, as they are watertight, they are a better alternative to material containers that can easily get wet during the expeditions. Today we’re chatting to a maker who have the unusual distinction of belonging to two separate counties, neither of which is historically renowned for perry. Rust bluing was developed between hot and cold bluing processes, and was originally used by gunsmiths in the 19th century to blue firearms prior to the development of hot bluing processes. The process was to coat the gun parts in an acid solution, let the parts rust uniformly, then immerse the parts in boiling water to convert the red oxide Fe

Blue Barrel: We tasted first our first real perry at Broome Farm, a Blakeney Red if I recall, it was this that sparked our interest in making perry. We then found that there was an abundance of wild pears dotted around the city planted ornamentally on streets and public spaces. We found the wild pear had similar traits to the perry pears & have since come across a few perry pear trees in gardens and orchards. Treating with an oiled coating enhances the protection offered by the bluing. This process is also the only process safely used to re-blue vintage shotguns. Many double-barreled shotguns are soft soldered (lead) or silver brazed together and many of the parts are attached by that method also. The higher temperatures of the other processes as well as their caustic nature could weaken the soldered joints and make the gun hazardous to use. [4] Universally recognised as one of the most reliable and long-lasting industrial storage containers, our blue plastic drums are secure, hardwearing and suitable for storing and transporting a range of different goods. We supply two main kinds of plastic drum:

Making your choice: Canoe pack or blue barrel?

A barrel is one of several units of volume applied in various contexts; there are dry barrels, fluid barrels (such as the U.K. beer barrel and U.S. beer barrel), oil barrels, and so forth. For historical reasons the volumes of some barrel units are roughly double the volumes of others; volumes in common use range approximately from 100 to 200 litres (22 to 44impgal; 26 to 53USgal). In many connections the term drum is used almost interchangeably with barrel.

Blue Barrel: We generally make traditional still perry which is either bottled or sold in bag in box. Although due to a shy crop last year we will be focusing more on our bottled range this year. In the international oil market context, however, prices in United States dollars per barrel are commonly used, and the term is variously translated, often to derivations of the Latin / Teutonic root fat (for example vat or Fass). [1] The food-grade version of these drums is popular in the food industry where they’re commonly used to store and transport large quantities of liquids, semi-solid and powered foodstuffs. In fact, they provide an airtight and spill-proof container that keeps contents fresh and prevents contamination. These barrels are also BPA-free, which is important in today's food industry. In the oil industry, one barrel ( unit symbol bbl) is a unit of volume used for measuring oil defined as 42 US gallons or 160 litres [a] [10] or 35 imperial gallons. [10] Both the 30-litre and the 60-litre drums have handles so they can be easily moved and passed around on the canoe, but also between the vehicles used on the expeditions as they fit into Land Rovers and minibuses. Modern home hobbyist versions of this process typically use a hydrogen peroxide and salt solution, sometimes preceded with a vinegar soak, for the rusting step to avoid the need for more dangerous acids.
