Description

This intriguing London Dry gin, has been made using the distillery's organic base spirit, botanicals including sorrel and cowberries grown on the estate, and of course, the water that flows from the slopes of Ben Rinnes. I wanted to include a little bit here about the distillation, as I think it’s something that is relevant but also something that it’s important for consumers to both understand and not see as a negative – so long as distilleries are transparent about it.

What really hits you first is the berries – I’ll confess I have absolutely no idea what rowan berries taste like, but I’m now intrigued to find out at some point. In fact, in many cases, I see it as a positive since so many incredible gins, made with as much love and passion as those distilled inhouse, wouldn’t exist if they weren’t able to start this way. Over 300 guests from the Scottish drinks industry joined to celebrate achievements, which included the announcement of the winner of the top award of the night, Scottish Gin Distillery of the Year 2022. Best of all when you drink this gin you'll be supporting leading conservation charity, the John Muir Trust.I dialled back a bit from the usual equal parts since the gin has a little more innate sweetness and went with 40ml gin, 25ml Campari and 20ml Cocchi which seemed to balance things out nicely and was far too easy to drink. Founders Michael and Katie Morrison are delighted to now be able to make their gin in the first distillery on the island - Scotland's most westerly - after they were granted a full distillers licence along with full bonded warehouse facilities, meaning they no longer have to get it contract distilled elsewhere. This area is renowned for exploration, adventure and discovery, characteristics which are reflected through both the design and flavour of Ben Lomond. The blackcurrant, in particular, seems to linger long after you’ve swallowed as that heat from the pepper kicks in at the end as well.

I think what shocked me a little bit on that first taste is just how much sweetness comes through from the fruit given that this is a dry gin. Our beacon will guide you so far, but beyond that is the freedom to drink wherever and however you choose; be that somewhere familiar with a classic or off grid with something new, there are no wrong routes. Housed in an eye-catching blue bottle, inspired by the colours of the local heather in bloom, Ben Lomond Gin has been created as a celebration of the unique flora, fauna and scenery of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Bought as a gift and the recipient assured me the blood orange and pink grapefruit Gin was “outstanding” . More recently though, they’ve expanded their range into gin, vodka and rum – one of which we are, of course, going to take a look at (no prizes for guessing which). In the highly sought after taste competition, 12 Gold Medals were presented with Caorunn, Edinburgh Gin, Holyrood Distillery and Isle of Bute each collecting two golds each. The Ben Lomond Gin is so passionate about the local landscape that the brand has entered a partnership with leading conservation charity, the John Muir Trust.
