A barbell is a straight metal bar designed to support compound movements with heavy weighted plates (deadlift, squat, OHP, bench press, snatches, cleans, etc.). One feature that we think folks will love is the extra space on the sleeve for loading plates. Our 30kg bar brags the most loadable sleeve length on the market with a whole 20.5″ of loadable sleeve! The key differences between Olympic and powerlifting bars are the whip and sleeve properties. These allow the lifter to generate and use momentum to lift effectively and safely.

The well-informed lifter will be able to spot these differences and know how and when to use each type of barbell. This knowledge will set you up for success in your workouts, particularly as you become more advanced, and in this you will see why.

WEIGHT LIFTING PLATES

Sleeve spin: Olympic bars have sleeves with smooth, fast bearings (often called needle bearings), which allow the bar to spin rather than getting caught by the momentum of the plates Women’s bars are not made exclusively for women; they can be used by individuals with smaller stature or mobility issue. Safety Bar:

Olympic Bars are longer and stronger than Standard Bars and are able to withstand a maximum weight load of up to 750kg. Olympic Weight Plates therefore come in heavier sizes with a 2” diameter hole in the centre of the plate. They are available from 1.25kg up to 50kg. Olympic Weights are better suited for intermediate/advanced strength trainer who are lifting heavier than the novice/beginner lifter. There are a number of different Weight Plates available, including Cast Iron, Bumper Grip and Rubber plates. Bumper grip weights usually have a 2 or 3 grip design which allows easy transition of the weight. The rim of the weight plate is surrounded by rubber which helps protect the weight from chipping and also reduces the chances of floor surfaces scratching or damaging. Rubber Encased Weights

Knurling: The knurling is the engraved part of the shaft that provides a rough surface to enhance grip. The pattern and dimensions of the knurling will vary across barbells (i.e. some will have knurling at the center of the handle, some will not). These are recommended for beginners and non-advanced weight lifters. They are to be used with standard weight plates, which have a 1” diameter hole. Standard weight plates range from 0.5-25kg. Different Types of Weight Plates

Note: Power bars are best used for heavy squats, bench and OHP, where no flex in the bar is best, but deadlifting is actually a little different as some flex in the bar can be good for the lift (if you want to max out your PR). Multi-purpose Barbell: Weight Plates and Barbells, whether that's the Olympic, Standard or Studio variety, are favoured by the most experienced bodybuilders and weightlifters throughout the world over weight machines (such as Multi Gyms or Cable Machines). This is because weight machines are more restrictive. Whilst weight machines are still an important part of any strength training routine, they do not offer the same benefits as free weights. Different Types of Weight Plates Standard Weights Multi-purpose: The most common bar you’ll encounter. These are based on Olympic barbell dimensions and combine all the features to accommodate general weightlifting. They are ~7’4” with moderate knurling and medium whip. A 7ft barbell, also known as an Olympic barbell, is the standard size for barbells used in weightlifting competitions. It is typically made from steel or another durable metal and is 2.2 meters long and weighs 20kg. The sleeves on each end are 16.5 inches in length, which provides enough space to hold several weight plates. What is a 6ft Barbell? Since some of these are specialized, you’re not likely to find them all at your local big-box gym. Most gyms will have multipurpose, Olympic and power bars (or just multipurpose barbells exclusively). That said, most will have safety bars and hex bars. Very few, and typically only private or specialty gyms, will have women's, deadlifting and squat bars - the latter are specialized bars that are expensive and require a certain skill to use. Home use barbells, on the other hand, are designed for occasional or light use in a home gym setting. They are typically made from lower-grade materials such as plain steel, and are not built to withstand the same level of wear and tear as commercial barbells. They are also generally rated for a lower weight capacity, usually ranging from 130kg to 340 kg.
