As with many of her stories, Chase made her heroine a strong female, deciding to model Jessica after the type of women who lived a few generations previously and who had "a more practical, frank attitude toward sex". Afterwards, Jessica promptly falls asleep, causing her husband to seethe "that was what he was supposed to do".

At times I felt sooo sorry for Dain, who grew up unwanted and unloved, but other times I wanted to slap him upside the head and tell him to grow up already! Lord of Scoundrel should be essential reading for all historical romance fans as it was so far ahead of its time.I liked her writing style, as it was fun, in your face, quite funny, very witty, with some historical inaccuracies and some modern turn of phrases with a little bit of Old testament flavour (all of which I am willing to ignore). She goes to the gambling hall where he is spending the remainder of his night - and shoots him (only in the arm though and she is an expert shot)! Hormonally speaking there is nothing that can really pinpoint a man's superior need for sexual release. She was willing to save and adopt her husband's bastard child even if he wanted nothing to do with him. Wishing to depict Jessica as the "Extreme Female", Chase emphasizes her clothing and gives Dain "a chance to exercise his caustic wit", as he deems the latest fashions to be ridiculous.

She comes to one of his usual gatherings with courtesans, alcohol and gambling, commands everyone to get out and shoots the bastard.So if you are having a bath ,or out of time to visit your grandmother the man can have sex with other women because he has urges. She attended New England public schools, before she went off to college and earned an English degree from Clark University. Jessica is on a mission to prise her brother from the clutches of teh monster who is ruining his life, but when she meets the Marquis she cannot keep away and things get very complicated. There's a great deal more plot than that, and some steamy bedroom scenes, but the characters are what shone through.

But they are incredibly effective, because of the passion between Jessica and Dain, and the deep caring and love they feel for each other. I also admire the author to provide Jessica with all the verbal and physical attire of an intelligent and attractive woman. LORD OF SCOUNDRELS has been on my to-read list for five years, so I was delighted when it was selected as the book of the month for the Unapologetic Romance Readers monthly read.Let me preface this by saying, there is a lot about this book that is very 90's problematic and would not pass a present day debriefing, but that being said I enjoyed it immensely.
