With middle notes of gardenia, mimosa, and ylang-ylang, it concludes with a captivating base of ambergris, musk, and vanilla.

I don’t think the sillage is big with the newer formulation but I am certain if I use more than 5 sprays, it would be bigger. Luckily for us who prefer less horsepower, Givenchy released (probably as an apology) the brilliant green-floral Insensé and the maximally comforting Organza just a couple of years after Amarige.When I was young my mom tended to wear the spicy amber and vanilla fragrances, so if your mom was into the big florals you may have very different feelings than I do about this fragrance. Both versions are beautiful, but I find them a little too dramatic and big for day wear, at least for me. Very strong the first 15 min then it settles into a smooth, creamy jasmine and gardenia scent that lasts forever. Often, misunderstood, Amarige is liberally applied, much to the discomfort of all that come in contact with saturated percussive florals and booming woods.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy a good strong fragrance — I spend hours happily engulfed in heavy fogs of my favorite sillage monsters, so strong and thick I can almost taste them.

When trying fragrances from that era, I enjoy the ambers and vanillas and generally crinkle my nose at the florals. I have a 1991 mini, I want to try the current formula, if you like sweet hyacinth, YOU MUST GET THIS. Despite all this, I hope when you finally wear this scent it can inspire some mystery, tragedy or sexuality for you too. When I last wore my vintage Amarige I was complimented on my perfume 8 hours after I lightly sprayed it on my skin!

Jasmine is the Queen Bee in this bouquet, but she is elevated and beloved by the rest of the notes rather than getting her elbows out for the top spot. Also wanted to point out that there are many modern scents out there that will challenge you in the same way, but these scents are the real stinkers, duds, unlike this complex creature. If Amarige were released today by Tom Ford or Ariana Grande (or Ex Nihilo or MFK or whomever the affluent youth fancy) it would be hugely popular among the under 30 crowd (not that it actually isn’t still popular in general because I think it’s a top seller online). The sandalwood is actually noticeable in this, and there's something about the quality of the tone of it that sings really well alongside the warmth of the florals.

Some kind of clash with my body chemistry brings out a heavily emphasised chamomile slightly pee like facet which I really do not enjoy. Givenchy Amarige Eau de Toilette spray is a confident fragrance designed for the sophisticated woman. The vintage has slightly more soapy aldehydes, the new has a brief sharp sweet top note that I find odd, but fades quickly. The mother is inside, reading a book and drinking tea, preparing a good snack for the children and the pets. Most of the big, bold fragrances from the eighties and nineties (mostly the florals) always put me off.

I love everything about it - the classy bottle, the uplifting and attractive scent that hits you immediately, even the colour of the perfume matched perfectly with how it makes me feel. However, despite all of the notes that make this gorgeous nectar, it’s hard to isolate any of them due to the seamless blending. My father was a jazz musician and he was having a true revival in the 90s, playing all over the SF Bay Area, at venues such as Yoshis. Amarige is a perfume you wear for yourself, not to please others - I honestly think you should do that with every fragrance. I woke up and unwrapped Amarige as my one Christmas gift I had hoped for, and was happier than I had been for a while.
