Retrieved June 20, 2022. Facelift is another iconic album from Alice in Chains that you should consider purchasing or hunting for on vinyl. Facelift was the album that introduced Alice In Chains to the world and contains their first hit single, “Man in the Box.” For people who collect vinyl based on the cover art that you’re going to display, the Jar of Flies album definitely is right up your alley. The album cover depicts an adolescent boy staring into a revolting jar of flies.

It was also a time when Alice in Chains was at the height of their powers: they’d been together for almost a decade and had just released their masterpiece Dirt (which would go on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time), with Sap following closely behind it. Paul Evans of Rolling Stone called the EP "darkly gorgeous", [21] and Steve Huey stated " Jar of Flies is a low-key stunner, achingly gorgeous and harrowingly sorrowful all at once." [20] Awards and accolades [ edit ] Dirt is one of the most well-known Alice In Chains albums, and with good reason. This record was an important part of their career, as it’s the first release featuring guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell full-time. Alice in Chains | Chart History. Mainstream Top 40". Billboard. Dirt and Jar of Flies are both Alice In Chains' most essential releases, nothing else they did could touch either of them in terms of ground covered, consistency, songwriting and instrumentation. Although I do think Dirt is by far their best, this definitely isn't too far behind and it's actually the one I tend to listen to more these days. Seven songs, and not one of them is bad. Jar Of Flies contains everything you'd expect after listening to Dirt - it's dark, depressing, complex, heavy, visceral but at the same time, it's nothing like you'd expect. My favourite song on the album and one of the best songs Alice In chains ever wrote and recorded. Actually, forget that. It's one of the best songs ever written and recorded. Period. The most emotionally stirring on the album, and one of the most emotionally affecting songs I've ever heard. It's just a song that means so much. It's so deep, complex, dark and incredibly haunting. Never have I heard a song that portrays loneliness, depression and isolation in such a way. I also think that it's Layne's best vocal performance as well, which is a real compliment considering how amazing a vocalist he was. 'Nutshell' is so full of pain, depression, torture and misery. As haunting as it is beautiful. Alice in Chains | Chart History. Radio Songs". Billboard. Eldridge Industries. April 23, 1994. Archived from the original on May 18, 2018 . Retrieved April 10, 2018.

A slow, acoustic folk ballad, with the sonic delight of the acoustic from "Nutshell" making a return. Jerry Cantrell's voice, while not Staley's, is still really good in its own right and is more appropriate for the beginning than Staley's. One often overlooked thing in this song is the harmonica work. It is what makes the song, and needs more credit. Halfway through the song, the folksy ballad speeds up and the drums come in, with Staley taking over the vocals. The singing is very emotional, especially when he yells "I'm scared to death". Also, in the aforementioned part of the song, the harmonica goes crazy, and that harmonica solo remains a favorite among solos of any type. They took a bit of time off and then reconnected with a new front runner to produce some more music and tour.
