As you’d expect from the most awarded rum maker in the world – with more than 1000 awards and counting – BACARDÍ Reserva 8 uses 100% sustainably sourced ingredients that are chosen for quality and flavour. The flavour profile of both rums is consistent, it’s just that the newer bottling took it a few notches higher – it could also be a side-effect of the 8 Year Old sitting in the bottle for longer, but I doubt. On the palate, the rum is sweet and rich, with a delicious combination of tropical fruits, peels, and winter spices. He took the same light and heavy rums used to blend BACARDI Superior Rum, and aged them for longer to give them greater depth of flavour.

Bottled at 40% ABV with the Bacardi 8 Year Old containing around 12 grams of sugar per litre according to the fatrumpirate‘s measurements, and the Ocho having around 18 grams of sugar per litre according to the Bacardi nutritional info. Bacardi 8 Year Old Rum is the premium dark rum from Bacardi made from a blend of rums from between 8 and 16 years old. A blend of Bacardis finest Caribbean rums, is aged for at least eight years in carefully selected small, mature oak casks before being masterfully blended to develop the rounded complexity. With its luscious and gentle flavours, this rum is perfect for sipping neat or for use in cocktails and mixed drinks. This is a nice rum on its own or sip slowly, soothed by the slow seduction of ice gently fusing with the rum . From what I’ve seen people were claiming that, despite the change of packaging, the bottle contains the same juice, but that’s definitely not the case for at least one reason – the location where it was produced.

What sets Bacardi apart and makes it truly unique is its role as a trailblazer in the world of rum production. They mention that it has a gorgeous aftertaste, it goes well with curiosity cola and that it's smooth, sweet and silky. It is also Bonsucro® certified – the world’s highest level for sustainable sugarcane production, which also ensures fair wages and conditions for sugarcane workers. It’s actually impressive that the flavour profile is so similar despite them coming from two different distilleries. It may not be reproduced in any way whatsoever without Ocado Limited's prior consent, nor without due acknowledgement. The bottle itself has all the usual Bacardi touches, the bat and the Case Fundada En Cuba slogan emblazoned across the bottom. Charcoal filters have been used for extra smoothness and the unique taste of pronounced dried stone-fruit with hints of black cherry. A very Highland malt like dry wood is the dominant note on the palate, with tobacco, dry fruit, and vanilla singing backup.
