There's also the *myriad* of questions I have about the mythology of this story, but I won't bring them up because it seems like the mythology wasn't the part Jason June was interested in exploring or constructing. Much like Disney Channel movies, don't think too much about it. Take it at face-value.) I also thought the fake dating was solid, there was good communication, a well paced shifting from fake to real, and there was definitely chemistry between the characters. The angel, Teacake, was super awesome and freaking beautiful, as I’ve said before. I really want to see this book made into a movie because, a) gay, and b) YES. HELLO. THE ANGEL, especially after all the wing grafts where she has different color wings ooooohhhh yeah, IS SO BEAUTIFUL. I just kind of wish a book about angels falling out of the sky was a bit more exciting!!!! But you can’t always get what you want. What I did like mostly does revolve around representation. It's really nice to see not only a whole society of people without a gender binary, but also a love interest happily using they/them pronouns and no one flinching. It's also nice to see a larger main character and love interest, and never have body image become a barrier.

And there’s a spoilery thing about Teacake that they do that I loved, and I sort of wish I could flail about it without being spoilery lol. But anyway, I really enjoyed that. But it’s perhaps significant too that she had got away with so much in the past, leading to an overconfidence about her ability to wing it – as she did even in the early days of her leadership campaign. If there’s one thing missing from this juicy tale of high political farce, it’s arguably a more unsparing account of what allowed a politician so flawed to rise so high at the expense of us all: a previous leader promoting her to spite his rivals, a dysfunctional Conservative party, but also an indulgent rightwing press that turned on her only when it was too late. Less a drama from “out of the blue”, perhaps, than a car crash waiting to happen. I want to start by saying that I wasn't a far of this author's YA debut, Jay's Gay Agenda. I wasn't expecting much coming into this novel, which may be why I was pleasantly surprised: it really seems as though the author took some of the criticisms for Jay's Gay Agenda in stride and used them to improve. Gone are the constant out of touch pop culture references (thank GOD) and in is a more structured storyline and better rounded characters.

Inspiration

This book just was so wonderful, it immediately became one of my favorite ever. It's just pure honeyed poetry with lovely imagery, but it's also raw and brutal, reflecting the cruel reality and the small windows we have to escape it from time to time. Honestly, I haven't been that emotional about a book for a long time, but this one definitely pulled all my heartstrings and I ended up tearing up several times, especially at the end. It was just too wonderful , too well-written. I definitely recommend it to anyone, it's just a beautiful, beautiful journey!!

Gellir darllen y stori dyner, gadarnhaol hon fel metaffor am fod yn LHDTC+, teimlo'n 'wahanol' mewn rhyw ffordd neu fel cydnabyddiaeth syml bod pawb yn unigolyn. Mae'n ddathliad hyfryd dros ben o fod yn driw i chi'ch hun.The reason Father Dearest is totally buggin is that angels are falling out of the sky. Understandably everyone is buggin about this, but Dad is especially because he’s like “I wanna catch one of these bad boys, who, yes, are falling unpredictably but also I bet I can figure it out using the power of Math if I try.” Also he probably would have said “Maths” because England. Ha ha.
