By 'confused' I mean that readers may wonder if they are in fact reading Walliams, as well as being a little confused as the story progresses. There is nothing amiss about a writer branching out, sampling new genres and moving outside their comfort zone (comedic writing is clearly a genre Walliams can write almost in his sleep). David Walliams has revolutionised reading for children and become one of the most influential children’s writers today. Since the publication of his ground-breaking first novel, The Boy in the Dress (2008), Walliams has seen unprecedented growth with global sales exceeding 32 million copies, and his books translated into 53 languages. I actually think David Walliams is better than Roald Dahl. I know, I know. Roald Dahl is amazing, legend, one of a kind but David's books are genuinely good, kind, honest and most importantly wise. I will be always grateful for that. I didn't like the Audible version very much, the music used as bookends to chapters was annoying, a little 80s computer-sounding, and I think I'd have preferred to read an illustrated paper copy. I did find myself tuning out a few times, which I try very hard not to do.

David Walliams is fast becoming a global phenomenon in the world of children’s literature – his ability to wow fans is unprecedented with global sales over 14.1 million. As these two novels were very much successful, much more was expected from author David with the novel, Billionaire Boy. The central plot of the book revolves around a boy named Joe, who seems to have a number of reasons to be extremely happy in his life. Little Britain’, which he co-created with Matt Lucas, started on Radio 4 and soon progressed to BBC1. The show has won numerous international awards including three BAFTAs, and now plays in over 100 countries. ‘Little Britain Live’ performed to a million people in the UK, Ireland and Australia. David and Matt followed ‘Little Britain’ with the hugely popular spoof airport documentary series 'Come Fly With Me'. But Joe isn’t a one-dimensional character. After getting bullied at his wealthy school and called names such as “The Bum-Wipe Heir, Master Plop-Paper […] And that’s just the teachers” Joe asks to go to a comprehensive school so that he can hide his wealth and fit in with everyone else. This doesn’t last long when his dad reveals their identity by showing up at school in the ‘Bum Air’ helicopter, and Joe upsets his best friend Bob by paying the bullies to leave him alone. We soon realise it’s not Joe’s fault that he’s the son of a “bog-roll billionaire,” and that his intentions are actually good. He also teaches us that money isn’t everything. And when his mother, the Queen, is dragged away to the Tower of London, Alfred must screw up his courage and battle to save her, himself… and the entire city.'

Publication Order of Non-Fiction Books

Mr Stink, Gangsta Granny, The Boy in the Dress and Billionaire Boy have all been adapted into TV comedy dramas. David’s books have also been made into theatre productions including Mr Stink, Gangsta Granny, Ratburger and The First Hippo on the Moon. It was a major bonus that it was centered around a zoo too, which of course I loved, but with that setting, Walliams was also able to get the message out of not being cruel to animals (as well as each other), and the power of breaking down bullying was a strong theme. I love that the glossary informs you of the facts about the animals in the book, because he did make them do some rather preposterous things in the story! As well as his Children’s fiction, David has also published four number one bestselling picture books, his latest, The Bear Who went Boo! was published in November 2015 and has had total sales of over 85,000 to date. The Queen’s Orang-utan, David’s third picture book was written exclusively for Comic Relief with David giving all of his proceeds from the book to the charity.

After joining the actors’ union Equity, he changed his name from Williams to Walliams because there was already a person with the name David Williams in the union. One of the earliest novels written by author David Walliams was titled as ‘Billionaire Boy’. David has proved himself as a dramatic actor in BBC2's 'Capturing Mary' with Dame Maggie Smith, in BBC1's Agatha Christie series 'Partners In Crime', as Frankie Howerd in the biopic ‘Rather You Than Me’ for BBC4, and on the stage in Harold Pinter’s 'No Man’s Land' starring alongside Sir Michael Gambon. He received the Comedy Award at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his performance as Bottom in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ directed by Michael Grandage. Soon, someone comes into his life, who appreciates Joe for being himself and not because of his money. But still a problem exists as Joe is about to learn that as soon as money gets involved, nothing remains as it used to be. Joe has always heard his elders, saying that the best things in life always come for free, but if he does care about them, he is definitely going to all of them.

His most recent fiction title, The World’s Worst Children, published on 19th May 2016 sold over 340,000 copies in the UK alone. It went straight to No. 1 on release where it stayed for 4 weeks and also concurred Children’s Books charts, where it stayed at No.1 for 7 weeks. Internationally sales continue to thrive, The World’s Worst Children also went straight to No. 1 in the Australian children’s chart and remained there for three consecutive weeks and reached the No. 1 in the overall book chart in New Zealand. There is a lot to like about this book. It’s different and the concept is very topical - a dystopian vision of the future with greedy, despotic types in control of the country. And I thought that the story followed some interesting twists and turns. Lovable newsagent and fan-favourite Raj appears in (nearly) all of the David Walliams novels. Described as being “like the funny uncle you always wished you had” – but even better, he sells sweets – Raj is neither teacher nor parent, so he can give the young characters his honest advice along with a dubious bargain or two, such as discounts on half-eaten sweets.

As an adult, I didn't particularly enjoy this, but listening as someone who needs to be aware of children's tastes and trends, I can't see this making waves as Walliams' comic efforts have done. While Alfie of course becomes a braver hero than he starts out as, it's a genre (or mix of) that is better suited to the adolescent who can deal with the more mature themes more comfortably. There is a lot here that will puzzle and put off. I can easily say that David Walliams is one of my favourite Middle Grade Author's, and his partnership with Tony Ross is a match made in heaven. I honestly cant wait to see what they create next. With all these things happening in his life, he has become the wealthiest 12 year old boy in the whole city. However, Joe does not seem to be happy rather. The reason is that even though he has billions of pounds, he does not have even a single friend with whom he can play. During that time, he used to reside at the Manor Hall and later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama in the year 1992.
