Description

Some of the most emotional moments occur when he greets his young children at the beach for the first time after his stroke, a telephone "conversation" with his 92-year old father (Max Von Sydow), and flashbacks to his youth - driving with his girlfriend, shaving his father, supervising a fashion shoot, and taking his son on a trip in a new sports car.

My Lucky Day: He describes a day where, for half an hour, the alarm on the machine that regulates his feeding tube has been beeping non-stop, his sweat has unglued the tape on his right eyelid causing his eyelashes to tickle his eye, and the end of his urinary catheter has come off and he is drenched. Cinecittà: The author describes the location of the Maritime Hospital at Berck which is in the Pas de Calais.Schnabel's Portrait of an Artist in Still Life" Archived 8 October 2012 at the Wayback Machine, Review of: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, by Darrell Hartman, New York Sun, 28 September 2007. Several key aspects of Bauby's personal life were fictionalized in the film, most notably his relationships with the mother of his children and his girlfriend. The camera angles/visuals are breathtaking (courtesy of two-time Oscar winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski), and in some moments he makes us see everything from Bauby's point of view. Bauby's girlfriend as a narcissistic flake who couldn't bring herself to visit her paralyzed lover, while at the same time glorifying the mother of his children as the steadfast, dutiful companion who remained loyal despite Bauby's love for another woman.

The penultimate vignette relays, in great detail, the day of his grievous stroke, effectively mirroring the prologue by grounding the reader in the chronological and material reality of his situation, and reining in (for a moment) the more fantastical elements of the narrative. He likens his physical state to being inside of a diving bell, while a butterfly symbolizes the intact agility of his mind. Jean-Dominique Bauby died two days after the French publication of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. He then goes on to the next exhibit which is a recreation of his hospital room except his pictures and posters on his wall contain stills of people he recognizes.France made the mistake of submitting the (fantastic) animation "Persepolis" instead of "Diving Bell", but they should know the Academy would never give Best Foreign Film for an animated movie, as good as it might be, and therefore neither of them got the nomination. Bauby's condition is manifesting itself rather differently than his counterpart's, and differently to the text book cases that medical staff are more familiar with. Then Bernard and he have an appointment with an influential Italian businessman whose headquarters are in the pillar of a viaduct. In December of that year, however, on an ordinary Friday evening, while driving through Paris to pick his son up for a weekend of fun and bonding, he suffered a massive stroke.

Among his compassionate recuperative team are his physical therapist Marie, and his speech therapist Henriette. Their relationship has changed because before his stroke his father was the weaker and the more infirm, and the author helped to care for him, but now, his father is far more able to care for himself than Bauby is. Feeling rejected and angry, the therapist stomps out of the room but apologizes and comes back shortly to resume the treatment. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly won awards at the Cannes Film Festival, the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs, and the César Awards, and received four Oscar nominations. These events include playing at the beach with his family, getting a bath, and meeting visitors while in hospital at Berck-sur-Mer.He explains the joy, and deep sadness, of seeing his children and of hearing his aged father’s voice on the phone.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007): Dir: Julian Schnabel / Cast: Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle Seigner, Max Von Sydow, Marie-Josee Croze, Anne Consigny: Depressing yet provocative film about freedom of mind and body. But that's actually the Academy's fault for their stupid rules, since France should've been allowed to submit both movies. He mulls over how, like a pressure cooker, he must contain a delicate balance of resentment and anger which leads him to the suggestion of a play he may base on his experiences, with a final scene in which the paralytic man stands up and walks but a voice says, "Damn! Long, complicated but, amazingly, quite possible--resulting an an actual book "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly"--which also became the title of this movie.

All in all, I was surprised how watchable the dub was, as I usually avoid dubs because they are done so poorly and so much of the original film is often lost.
