He thought I might like the manga version since I enjoyed the anime. The forging of the relationship between Sagiri and Gabimaru forms the crux of this volume, but it's a fairly uncommon one for the shonen genre. Sagiri and Gabimaru's relationship isn't one of dominance or admiration or quiet lust, it's a bond of mutual respect formed by an emotional connection. Sagiri isn't sexualized, there's no "will they, won't they" and both of their abilities are shown as burdensome tools, rather than aspects of their personality. It's a nice change of pace and offers enough possibilities to spice up what could otherwise become another battle manga.
