Wobbly, and a bit bland on its own but it would take other flavours well. Lidl and Morrisons both also had passable versions. Discover which are the best vegan and veggie burgers for the vegans, vegetarians and flexitarians in your life The “beautiful, shining, golden ointment” extolled by Elizabeth David is just an emulsification of egg yolks, lemon juice or vinegar, mild olive oil and salt. But when I rounded up a baker’s dozen of brands to try, a perusal of the ingredients lists made it clear that not all mayonnaises are created equal.

Lighter mayo typically contains less than half the fat and calories of standard mayonnaise. It tends to be the same price as the full-fat stuff, whether supermarket own label or branded. The panellists rated the taste, texture, aroma and appearance of each brand of mayonnaise and told us what they liked and disliked about each one. Rapeseed oil mostly contains unsaturated fat, though, and most of the mayos we tested only just tipped into the red traffic light ‘high’ rating for saturated fat. The make-up of the panel broadly represents the demographic profile of adults in the UK. Each brand of mayonnaise was assessed by 73 people.Unctuous, devoid of strange additives, and endlessly adaptable – stir in 1tbsp olive oil and a crushed clove of garlic for extra flavour. Sainsbury’s and Waitrose tied with Lidl on score, but both are a little pricier. If you're looking to switch from branded mayo, these are all good cheaper options depending on what your nearest supermarket is.

It turns out that in the UK, there are no rules: in fact manufacturers can leave out egg altogether. According to the UK Food Standards Agency, “Mayonnaise doesn’t absolutely have to have eggs in by law, but it is expected, so an indication of the substituting ingredient must be given.” So all those vegan mayonnaises ought to be making clear what they use instead of egg. The brands I looked at certainly weren’t putting that information on the front of the label. In recent years we have overseen a range of exciting flavours be introduced to our brand – including Chilli Charger Mayo, Burger Sauce and Coronation Mayo. Our portfolio is the perfect source for driving our purpose to ‘Make Taste Not Waste’. When we tested vegan mayo in 2022, several supermarket brands, including Morrisons and Sainsbury’s, were rated highly by our tasting panel. Hellmann’s vegan mayo also went down well, but if you're looking to save on vegan mayo, it's worth giving own brands a try. These weightings are based on how consumers rank the importance of different attributes of mayonnaise. Recycling your mayo bottles Salt levels are medium to high, while protein, fibre and sugar are all low. All-in-all, mayonnaise is a condiment to be enjoyed in moderation. What about light mayo?So transform a plain sandwich into a delight worthy of a New York Deli, by smearing some Hellmann’s Mayonnaise onto two slices of bread and loading up with your favourite fillings.
