During our last podcast recording, Sean and I started talking about which licenses we would love to see in a Coded Chronicles game including the A-Team and the Breakfast Club. Depending upon the mission played, players may be tasked with stopping a curse, preventing someone from breaking one, finding treasure, rescuing friends, or escaping with their lives. But if you allow yourself to get swept up in the adventure, then that’s when the game really sings just like a Cyndi Lauper tune blasting overhead as you ride your bike toward Astoria’s shore. The solo player acts as the “Goondocks Master” (GM) and their role will be to hinder, delay, and ultimately prevent the heroes from achieving the scenario-specific goal.

The Goonies Never Say Die is perfect for Goonies fans who’d like to recreate the onscreen adventure at the table.In the ancient time of 1985, a trailblazing film was released that captured the imaginations of many kids. It’s an easy game to get into as long as you have one person who knows the rules and can be the one to play the GM as they are the one responsible for keeping the game running.

When recording that video I made sure to not open up any of the sealed envelopes so you don’t really get a good look at the components but you can get an idea of how much stuff is in the box.The nice part is even if the Goonies fail, most adventures give players the option of either retrying or moving on to the next scenario, but with the caveat of giving the GM an additional GM card and token during setup. Along with this, you may also find other sources of four digit numbers, plus some of the characters have other interesting ways to interact with things other than just using skills. So, if you want to explore the wrench on the floor which has a code is 101 next to it, place a 1 in front of the 101 to make 1101, then read entry 1101 from the characters booklet that is doing the action. In case you don’t remember the plot to the 1985 classic, The Goonies, in which a group of low-income children manage to foil escaped convicts and rich snobs to find pirate treasure and save their homes, Prospero Hall has managed to capture the movie perfectly in board-game form for you and 1-4 friends to enjoy.
