Description

Approximately two months after the Nortan Civil War, Mare is finally leaving Paradise Valley with her family to return to Montfort, in time for the gala that is being thrown to get everyone together. Kilorn welcomes the Barrow family and fills Mare in on what has happened. Sara Skonos: A friend of Julian who works as a nurse with her ability to heal people, known as Skin Healing. She seems to know the truth behind the death of Cal's mother, Queen Coriane, and Elara thus punished her by mutilating her tongue, making her mute. The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Prince Maven, the friend who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind. Rane Arven: The instructor for the Silver Elites who has the ability to negate the powers of other people, known as Silencing.

Imprisoned, again: Mare plans to lead a team to the Choke to rescue the young soldiers. At Shade’s funeral, Farley hints that she’s pregnant (WITH SHADE’S BABY!) and won’t be coming on the mission. As the team is flying to the Choke, their plane is ambushed and begins plummeting to the ground. They find themselves surrounded by Maven and the Magnetrons of House Samos. Mare strikes a deal with Maven: she will be his prisoner, if everyone else goes free. Aveyard once said, that if an iPod with music from now survived, Mare would listen to "electronic, Daft Punk, Avicii, some Sia, Florence, Halsey, Lorde. And EVANESCENCE and MCR like the little wannabe punk she is." [citation needed]

Comments:

The author would either A) say the same thing three times per sentence or B) copy-paste the inane catchphrases (Red Dawn, Little Lightening Girl, Rise Red as the Dawn, etc). She reminds me of one of the know-all kids that we all remember from our school days, muscling in on every discussion because she read some Wikipedia article that makes her an insta-expert on everything and anything. Please . . .

I literally cannot get over this title. So much over-the-top symbolism... but not in the way the author wanted. And I also hate Maven. I can't find any redeeming quality in him, I knew from the very start how rotten and corrupted he was. He's not a misguided soul that started off as good and lost his way, he didn't exprerience an upleasant childhood or a trauma that made him this monster, he is just evil. He craves power, he's full of jealousy and hatred, he.murdered. babies. for heaven's sake to make a point! But I can't help but admit he's one of the reasons that made this book so gripping, while he had very few scenes, he was always present, making you shiver. Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control. They meet a man named Jon who can read the future. He does not join them, but he tells them that Julian, Mare’s old tutor and friend, and other newbloods are in Carros Prison. Maven’s mother, Queen Elara plans to use them in this war. Mare convinces the group to go and rescue them. Cal plans also to release the Silvers that are being held in the prison as well in hopes that they will join him. They are, after all, being detained because of their defiance of the queen. The idea of rescuing Silvers makes the others uncomfortable. Mare and the others go to the prison to save Julian, the newbloods, and also the Silvers that are imprisoned there. Nanny, a newblood, transforms into Maven. Cameron disables the Silvers’ powers. Nanven (Nanny disguised as Maven) is asked if she wants to see Elara, who is apparently at the prison. Nanven declines and the prison guards become suspicious. There’s a fight, and then Nanny transforms into the captain. Mare plans on making a deal with the Colonel. She plans to start a civil war, by using a news broadcast to display Elara’s body. The Colonel becomes Mare’s ally, and they do a Hunger Games type thing on the TV that is a shoutout for Reds, newbloods, and Silvers to join them against Maven. And I am revealed for exactly what I am - a particularly stupid fish, moving from hook to hook, never learning my lesson. Driscoll, Molly (February 27, 2015). " 'Red Queen' sells well – but is it different enough from other YA dystopian fare?". Christian Science Monitor.

Victoria Aveyard is without a doubt a very talented author, and the fact that she created so many flawed and three dimensional characters and inflicted so many emotions (albeit the most dominant ones were wrath and terror) is proof enough! The cliffhanger though shattered any resolve I had left, which meansWhen Maven was finally defeated and Cal restored to the throne, Cal saw himself forced to sentence his brother to death. During their final conversation, Maven convinced Cal that the boy he knew was lost forever. Despite Elara's work, Maven was incapable of deeply wounding Cal by showing him that his true self was still there in a forgotten corner, making the choice for his older brother. After Mare killed Maven, Cal mourned him deeply and resented her a little bit, even though he had already accepted Maven's fate and stopped searching for a way to cure him, after their conversation.

There's no doubt that Victoria Aveyard is a talented author, albeit an inconsistent one. The story telling and characterization of red queen are proof of this. So I'll give the next book the benefit of the doubt. So, I think everyone knew my opinions on the romance of RQ and I can happily say this love-square is over! There are no new love interests for Mare, thank god but the romance for Glass Sword is pretty much a giant question mark, it changes depending on Mare’s moods, I’d like to think I know what’s going to happen but honestly Glass Swords feels like a completely different book at this point, so anything is possible…. I guess. They reach the area of the prison that Julian is being kept in. Suddenly there’s a load of mist and the group is separated. Publishers Weekly found "There’s an unmistakable feeling of deja vu to this first installment in the Red Queen trilogy, which shares several plot points and similarities with the Hunger Games series, ... Fortunately, Aveyard’s conclusion leaves the story poised to depart from this derivative setup." [12]

It was also revealed that Elara took away Maven's love for his brother and father when he was a small child. When Maven started to have nightmares that caused him to cry at night, she took away his ability to dream. When Maven developed feelings for Mare, Elara tried repeatedly take them away as well, but without success, as had happened with Thomas before. Maven had a special type of love for Mare, one that could not be removed. Maven is still going on a killing spree in an attempt to draw Mare and the others out. He leaves notes for Mare after killing a newblood’s family, including a baby. Dark. He tells her that he’ll stop if she turns herself in. Mare refuses to do so, because why would she do that?! The group comes across a small group of the Scarlet Guard in the woods outside a city. The Guard leads them into tunnels, pretending to take them into the city. Mare realises that Crance, one of the Guard, is leading them into a trap. Mare collapses the tunnel.
