Description

Laphroaig 10 gets its distinctive taste from the natural features of Islay, the remote and rugged island off the West Coast of Scotland where the whisky is made. The General Wine Company sources wines from all over the world, but with a particular focus on small, independent producers. Very different to the sweeter malts so be aware and don't knock it back unless you like a strong hit. Aged for ten years, and distilled following the traditions laid down over the last 200 years by a succession of passionate and skilled master distillers.

Although I was gifted a bottle of Ardbeg 10 at Christmas and that gives this a good run for it's money mind. I have drunk more Laphroaig 10 over the past forty years than all the other whiskies added together. The distillery's location on the Isle of Islay, known for its abundant peat bogs, allows Laphroaig to create whiskies with a character that is deeply rooted in the island's terroir. It took the crown from Lagavulin 16 over two years ago and every so often I do a taste test between Lag 16, Arbeg 10 and Lap 10 and each time I prefer the Lap.

Laphroaig 10 year old is the original Laphroaig, distilled the same way today as when Ian Hunter invented it more than 75 years ago. One of whom was Ian Hunter, who laid down the process for Laphroaig 10 more than 75 years ago: and these methods are still followed today. This full-bodied variant is the foundation of all Laphroaig expressions and comes with a long finish. This 19th century cocktail is believed to have been created at New York City’s Waldorf Hotel (if you want to visit tod. This whisky has become slightly sweeter in recent years, and it appears beautifully on the nose, amidst the classic iodine/sticking plasters and cool wood smoke we love. Others can be deceiving - I have a bottle of Ledaig, the Tobermory peated expression, which smells like creme brulee and mashed potato on the nose - not a hint of peat until it hits the tongue. The scotch enthusiasts in your life will appreciate the warmth and hardiness after coming in from the cold. A classic dram, this full-bodied single malt has a surprising sweetness which leads into a long, warming finish.

It's like being dragged down to the sea shore in a storm and having your face pushed under the water before being pulled out and left to recover by a fire whilst having your cuts dressed with TCP and sticking plaster. Not to everyone's taste on account of the strong peaty smokiness, and the Select edition is better, but this is a good introduction to the style. Ages in seasoned oak barrels that were charred prior to distillation, this dram features lovely oaky notes as well as nut and vanilla and coastal hints. It's big, bold, smoky, with a hint of seaweed and a surprising sweetness, which makes Laphroaig an acquired taste for some, an essential taste for many – and for those who embrace it, a friend for life.
