Description

We were immediately impressed by the item's weight and durability, especially given its affordable price. The sliding drawer worked smoothly after long-term use and never squeaked or creaked. The drawer has to be cleaned by hand, but this shouldn't be much of an issue since it stores K-Cups instead of actual coffee beans. If stored properly, whole bean coffee loses nearly all of its flavor in about six to nine months and ground coffee in about three to five months. Coffee steadily begins to lose flavor much earlier than this, however. Whole bean coffee tastes best when brewed within 14 days of roasting, and ground coffee is best within a shorter time frame of about 10 days. This window may feel brief, but don't worry: Coffee still tastes good even after these respective time periods have passed. Think of it as a reference point for when coffee is at its peak freshness rather than a deadline by which you have to brew. Fellow priced the Atmos right in line with other coffee canisters. To us it’s worth every penny considering it keeps air out of our coffee beans. canister holds up to 6oz of coffee beans, 0.7L canister holds up to 10oz of coffee beans, and 1.2L canister holds up to 16oz of coffee beans.

As with any kitchen appliance, there are specific ways to clean and maintain your new Atmos. We’d like to preface this section by letting you know that the Atmos is not microwave safe, dishwasher save, or oven safe. If you want your Atmos to last awhile, we recommend not putting it in any of those places. First Use Ground coffee freshness: For each canister, we ground a bag of coffee and made notes on its color, aroma, and texture. Then we placed half the coffee in the canister and followed the included directions to close and seal it, leaving the rest of the coffee in the original bag. After eight days, we examined both batches, comparing their characteristics to each other and to the original notes. We also brewed a cup of coffee using each and compared their flavor and aroma.

What really sets this canister apart is its inner lid, which you press down via a handle to remove the air from inside. Out of the 15 canisters we tested, this one tied for first place in freshness and flavor, largely due to the effectiveness of the inner lid. The Airscape is also one of the easiest canisters to clean (even though it's not dishwasher-safe) because its large size allows customers to reach all parts inside with a sponge. A large part of what makes the item effective is its cork lid. It takes a firm push to get the lid on, indicating that the silicone gasket forms an airtight seal. Yet, it's not difficult to put the lid on; instead, it's just the right amount of tension. After storing whole-bean coffee in the canister for eight days, it came out fragrant and made a flavorful brew. We stored ground coffee in the canister for another eight days and it came out less vibrant but still sufficient. It's also convenient that the canister is dishwasher-safe, which isn't the case with many other models we tested. This smart Atmos jar banishes air, moisture, and odours from inside with a clever vacuum feature to stop your beans from ageing out before you’ve enjoyed them. After you’ve pressurized the container, the lid will stay suctioned onto the base of the unit. To release the pressure, there is a button on the top of the lid. Press this down fully and you’ll hear a satisfying hissing sound. This is the sound of air reentering the container. Once the hissing sound has stopped, the lid can easily be pulled off of the base of the container.

We tested the largest model, which holds 2.5 quarts. Since it isn't specifically designed for coffee, we found it more simplistic than other canisters, some of which include one-way CO2 valves, clasps, coffee scoops, and more. It's also on the expensive end, partially because of the durable stoneware it's made from, so it isn't the best value for money out there. Regardless, we gave it high marks for freshness, durability, and ease of cleaning. So if you want to avoid a rough brew you need the Fellow Atmos Storage Jar collection in your life. While glass isn't the best material for a canister, as exposure to sunlight causes coffee to go stale faster, the Bodum Yohki storage jar tested well enough that it deserves inclusion on this list. (It even outperformed several stainless canisters that we tested.) Just try to keep it out of direct sunlight if possible. Stainless steel is the most common material for a coffee canister, but plastic, ceramic, copper, and glass are all options, too. One key detail to look out for is whether the material is translucent and would expose coffee beans to UV rays, which would make them go stale faster. This mainly applies to plastic and glass. Another concern is durability. Would you prefer a more durable material like stainless steel? If aesthetic the biggest factor, you may prefer something that stands out more, like ceramic or copper. Oxo manufactures a variety of items to help households run smoothly, including its line of Pop containers. The 1.6-liter option is specifically designed for coffee, and it's one of the best values compared to other coffee canisters out there.Avoid storing fine substances like flours or ground coffee in the container; it can easily jam your vacuum pump and render your Atmos useless It’s been pretty neat to see how strong the vacuum in the unit is; we haven’t been able to remove the lid yet without first depressurizing it. Other Uses Please bear in mind that not all manufacturers provide correct imagery and we may put a similar or alternative image to the actual product for illustration purposes only. The actual item you receive may differ from that which is displayed, for example the box may have changed or a model may have been upgraded or changed after we have added the product online.

The Fellow Atmos coffee vacuum canister storage jar collection comes in two style variations - Stainless Steel or Glass – and both ooze the usual timeless elegance you can expect from Fellow. There are also several sizes to choose from so you can choose the container suited for the amount of coffee you brew. The Atmos doesn’t perform as well with powdered goods. This is because fine powders can get suctioned through the filter on the lid and end up clogging the vacuum pump. We wouldn’t recommend using the Atmos for anything smaller than the holes on the underside of the lid. Cleaning and Maintenance The Fellow Atmos Vacuum Canisteris sleek, easy to use, and available in several sizes and colors, not to mention it has a dependable airtight seal. As an alternative, the Oxo Steel Pop Containehas excellent value for money and passed our tests with flying colors. How We Tested Coffee Canisters These robust jars are built to withstand the test of time and are also perfect for other perishable products, such as biscuits or dried fruit. This problem is no different than what you’ve probably observed with freshly baked chocolate chip cookie. Even if you put bread in a sealed, airtight bag, it will still begin to stale over time. To fix this, you need to remove all the air from the bag. Thankfully, the smart folks over at Fellow found just the way to do that with the Atmos. Why Atmos? Ease of cleaning: Between the ground- and whole-bean tests, we cleaned each canister following the included directions. We ran dishwasher-safe models through a regular machine cycle and hand-washed the rest in the sink. We noted whether there were any corners or crannies that held on to coffee grounds and whether there was any wear and tear on the seals or damage to the exteriors. When you first open your Atmos, you’ll want to clean the entire unit before its first use. There are separate cleaning instructions for the lid and the canister. Don’t clean the lid under running water or submerged it. This can cause all kinds of problems with the vacuum pump. You’ll want to separate the lid from the filter and the gasket. The gasket is the rubber ring that holds the metal filter onto the lid. You can wash the filter, gasket, and canister with soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge. The lid should be cleaned with a damp cloth, but make sure not to let any water get inside.

Great coffee means FRESH coffee. And the primary way to keep your beans from losing their flavour and punch is to keep public enemy number 1 – aka oxygen - away from them. Over time, you may find that your Atmos gets dirty from coffee oils or cookie crumbs. Follow the care instructions outlined above and you’ll be all set to use your Atmos again after it dries. Other Considerations

Cons

If you like the product and want a full set for your kitchen, Planetary Design produces the Airscape in two other sizes: a small canister, which holds 8 ounces of coffee, and a medium-sized one, which can store up to 1 pound. All options are sold at reasonable prices—even this bulk one. This is an updated version of a previous Oxo coffee canister. The two are similar in size, price, and design, but the newer model comes with a couple of upgrades, especially regarding its ease of cleaning. It is now dishwasher-safe (aside from the lid) after previously being hand-wash only. You can find the Le Creuset Storage Canister in three sizes, starting at 23 ounces and working up to this 2.5-quart model. This offers the chance to buy a matching set in various sizes should you want to store other kitchen goods, like sugar and flour. The canister is dishwasher-safe, although the lid is hand-wash only.
