Of course, there’s plenty of saxophone; it’s more prominent in some songs than others, especially the aforementioned ‘Empress of the Damned’ and late album sleeper hit ‘Nuclear Date Night’ where alongside a bluesy solo, there’s some downright stunning hooks that’ll leave grins plastered across faces in jazzy ecstasy. This album has been on repeat for me for months as I could always find a song to fit my mood or change it completely.

I think looking back in 5-10 years this album will pale in comparison when compared to the first two. Rather than look over a barren wasteland of the future this is an anthem of survival and perseverance that is impossible not to sing along with.

In the last eight years, they’ve released just two albums to date, Unicorn marking their third album and, unsurprisingly, it’s just as jam-packed with features from across the musical spectrum as ever. We carry a broad range of CDs and vinyl (7”/12” singles and LPs) and specialise in indie, alternative, rock, punk, metal plus a few other genres. This is an act that is apt at reaching into the inspiration junk drawer and always finding a handful of ideas that will suit their needs. Their follow-up three years later, Dark All Day, leaned into industrial a wee bit more and despite this fact that catchiness only slightly wavered. I think Technoir 2 was ruined by the chorus from the second singer and many of the other tunes are just too much bubble gum for me.

Early in their career GUNSHIP very understandably did this, but on this album they are embracing the future in a way that they haven’t before. He’s got a voice that’s fit for Britrock—fine for a tenure as co-vocalist in Fightstar—but against the tide of incessant cinematics in which maximalism is the default setting, he doesn’t stand a chance. GUNSHIP have always seemed like an entity that could easily float into any space within the electronic music scene that they wanted to and bless their hearts they just don’t care to land in one spot. Regardless as a somewhat self-professed metalhead, synthwave provided some of the same release that I get from riffs and blast beats but it does so through a completely different sonic milieu. Granted, there’s not a ton that comes from that, seeing as most don’t get to show much of themselves off, instead falling into Gunship’s maw to be spat out as a nominal vocaloid fit for purpose.

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. It’s one of the reasons why Unicorn’s last leg is such a drag, where Westaway’s use as a functional mouthpiece just doesn’t gel with the overall intentions. While some of those track – such as the captivating “Run Like Hell” – are excellent they seem to pale slightly to that bombastic beginning. If that’s the intent, then obviously Unicorn is a roaring success, but empty-calorie nostalgia-baiting with nothing beneath the shiny, neon veneer is obviously not a good outcome. I’ve always considered GUNSHIP to be at the top of their class and one of the premier acts of their genre and Unicorn does nothing but prove this further. You’d think they’d be more memorable overall, given how ready their fanbase was to pounce on any assertions that Dark All Day wasn’t a good album (which it wasn’t), but maybe that’s just how it goes when there’s so little musical nutrition to go on. It just leads to an album that drags incessantly, not helped by how little variation there is the chugging synth progressions.

HAHAHA, how much nonsense I’ve read today, in fact, I didn’t even get halfway through your text, you didn’t use a single valid argument, just spewed your personal taste, terrible review.Without it, there’s no way an act running this short of ideas would have accumulated the reach they have, and broken out beyond an occasional side-project at best. Tastes Like Venom’ is another solid floorfiller, but it feels like it’s lacking some oomph, or perhaps just the star-studded remainder of Unicorn ’s other opening songs overshadow it. This review was written by a jaded failed musician or someone who was left by someone for another mate who loves Gunship. Neon laser light cuts through the deepest darkness on this contemplation of Imagination and how it may be our most important resource.
