After receiving twenty seven barrels of Port as a payment through their textiles business, they decided to focus all their energy on making the best Port wines from the Douro Valley. One of the unique winemaking techniques followed here is the addition of the grape spirit during the fermentation of the grapes to add to the sweetness and longevity of the wines.

Red port can be made from many types of grapes (castas), but the main ones are Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional. I've used Eton Vintners for many years and have always found the staff unfailingly helpful and wise. This wine is composed by Graham's Master Blender from wines put aside in the cellar by his great-grandfather, grandfather, father. Unfiltered or ""Traditional"" LBV ports require decanting like vintage ports do, and may improve in the bottle.Vintage ports are aged in barrels for a maximum of 2 years before bottling, and often require another 5 to 15 years of aging in the bottle before reaching what is considered proper drinking age. Port also known as Port wine, Vinho do Porto, Porto, or Porto wine is a sweet, fortified wine from the Douro Valley in the northern part of Portugal; it takes its name from the city of Oporto, the centre of port export and trading. Currently, Graham’s is the only British Port company that is run independently under one family's control. Yalumba has released a 50 year old tawny and Hardy's Whiskers Blake, Rosemount's Old Benson and Galway Pipe are also made in the traditional manner. In contrast to vintage port's short time in barrel, LBV port is aged between four to six years in barrel, to mature it more quickly.

Aged for an average of 40 years in seasoned oak casks, this 40 Year Old Tawny is a testament to time and patience. Complex and demanding measures are taken to produces Grahams’ exquisite ports, from the careful selection of every grape to the number of years seasoning until their peak of maturity is attained. During the 17th century, a couple of wine merchants noticed that the people in the Lamego monastery in the Douro Valley added grape spirit in the initial stages of fermentation to make the wines sweet and authentic.

Graham’s five vineyards are located in the Douro valley and all have the maximum ‘A’ grade classification. Well aged in oak and assembled by master blender Charles Symington from wines laid down by his father, uncles, grandfather and great-grandfather. While it is by far the most renowned type of port, from a volume and revenue standpoint vintage port actually makes up a small percentage of the production of a typical port house. Available by the bottle or case, your wine gift will be individually tailored with a personal message, tasting notes and vintage description. Tawny"" port produced outside Portugal is rarely aged long enough to develop a natural tawny colour.
