Description

Moving away from NAS functionality for a moment, we have a Raspberry Pi 4 and this board is well known for the GPIO and Argon have provided a breakout on the rear of the unit. Sorry for misleading you, but it seems the EON only uses 1x USB3 port to plug the drives SATA board.

Since Raspberry Pi 4 comes with a 1Gbps Ethernet, I decided to take advantage of it and create a reporting system in NodeRED that will monitor and report when the ISP is not keeping the contractual agreements. I tried that scenario where a 1080P stream would be sent to my computer from Argon Eon while I was trying to edit a multi-file project in 1080p/60fps – and I barely felt a difference between working on my local drive and NAS.After intall you may want to modify the fan configuration to match your environment You can change the default temperature setting by editing the file /etc/argoneon. Using more than a single drive on the Argon NEO will slow down performance thanks to the single USB 3 SATA connection. My EON is running as a NAS drive as well as a plex media server in it’s current setup and I have plans to test if it can expand to host a couple of security cameras as well. A long time ago, I read and article about air flow from fans in a case with a obstructed air inlet/outlet… the gist of the article was… if the barrier is around 1 hub diameter away from the obstruction, the airflow was improved. If it's using a Compute Module 4 instead and just using "Raspberry Pi 4" for name recognition, it could swap the USB-to-SATA bridge for a PCIe SATA controller - which would drop the overhead considerably.

The lower board is where our inverted Raspberry Pi 4 is connected via the GPIO, providing GPIO access via the external port.We plugged in a Pimoroni mini black hat hack3r breakout board, and attached an Explorer HAT Pro, one of the best Raspberry Pi HATs.

Products shown, tagged or featured on YouTube by creators are sold by merchants and are subject to merchant's terms and conditions. Our Raspberry Pi 4 immediately recognised the new devices, and soon we had a RAID system up and running.

If you want your home server not only capable of huge storage and Raspberry Pi performance, but also as something great to look at, this is for you. For the software we followed Argon’s guidance and downloaded the latest Raspberry Pi OS, but we did deviate a little. You’ll need a path to your media folder, which OMV exposes neatly in the Shared Folder section – just copy that path, and bind it to your local container folder structure and you are set to go. We moved on to testing the thermal properties of the Argon EON and, as we have a tall, open case with heatsinks and a 12V case fan, we felt assured that cooling would be good. Drives are connected to a massive heat spreader which doubles up as the back of the case and it’s pretty good at removing the heat.

I'm actually writing this up for Hackster right now, and spotted something I missed the first read-through: it's a four bay NAS, true enough. The fan will be triggered by one of two separate settings, the CPU temperature, or the HDD temperature. You’ll save money and get a regular supply of in-depth reviews, features, guides and other Raspberry Pi enthusiast goodness delivered directly to your door every month. Sure we have a choice of SSD or HDD SATA drives, but they all connect to the Raspberry Pi 4 via a single USB 3.
