The announcement was made on Geisel’s birthday, which is also the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day. Seuss Enterprises, the business that preserves and protects the author and illustrator's legacy, announced on his birthday, Tuesday, March 2, 2021, that it would cease publication of several children's titles including "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" and "If I Ran the Zoo," because of insensitive and racist imagery. Seuss Enterprises, citing a new focus on highlighting diversity, especially when it comes to race and gender identity. It does include his very first book, And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street, which was published in 1937. Academics have highlighted a Chinese character in Mulberry Street as problematic, due to him being depicted with chopsticks and a bowl of rice.

Dr Seuss Enterprises said it decided to stop publishing the six books last year but made its decision public on Tuesday, Read Across America Day, an event to promote reading in children and teenagers and aligned with Dr Seuss’s birthday, 2 March. These books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,” the business said in a statement on Tuesday. The National Education Association, which founded Read Across America Day in 1998 and deliberately aligned it with Geisel's birthday, has for several years deemphasized Seuss and encouraged a more diverse reading list for children. And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street has been criticized for including “a Chinese man with sticks”, who has two lines for eyes and can be seen holding chopsticks and a bowl.
