Niekedy sa žiaľ holokaust a vtedajšie udalosti skresľujú, bagatelizujú, zjemňujú, či dokonca popierajú. There were two quotes that really jumped out to me in this book ‘To render us subhuman’ and ‘could death be better than life’ sitting at home reading this book i felt awful for what they went through, how anyone could possibly not treat another human as just that, a human. It's hard to stomach those rude remarks, but you won't ask questions like that while reading this book.

On arrival, Lily's mother and her youngest sister and younger brother were immediately sent to the gas chamber, while Lily and her other two sisters Rene and Piri survived to go through months of work, exhaustion and starvation. The incredibly moving and powerful memoir of an Auschwitz survivor who made headlines around the world. It begins with her childhood in Hungary, before she and her family are taken to Auschwitz where her mother and two sisters perish. I have read a number of Auschwitz books and they have only ever really detailed life from getting off the train at Birkenau and the horrors that came after. I appreciate that, because other survivor testimonies I’ve read stop shortly after liberation, but of course the trauma continues.Although all the books I have read have been based at the same concentration camp i find it astounding how different each persons version is. Selbst als sie sich mit mehreren Familien eine Wohnung teilen musste und keine Privatsphäre hatte, konnte sie sich nicht vorstellen, dass es noch schlimmer wird. And when her great-grandson, Dov, decided to use social media to track down the family of the GI, 96-year-old Lily found herself making headlines round the world. An incredible, beautiful written page turner, I didn’t want the book to end- and not only because the story shows, photos which are interesting and was very suspense that keeps you riveted from the start to the end.

To use so much of her energy educating others about the darkest time in her life makes her both courageous and admirable - she’s a very special lady! Having read this book I am struck by two things; Lily Ebert is a remarkable woman and her great grandson, Dov Forman, is also a very remarkable young man. Das Leben kurz nach dem KZ, wo niemand glauben wollte, was damals passiert ist und sie als Lügnerin betitelt wurde. The accuracy of dates and facts in her book about her time in the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau contributes to the chorus of voices thanks to which we can get closer to the human experience in a world of utter dehumanisation. An American soldier handed Lily a bank note, inked with the words ‘a start to a new life - good luck and happiness’. Sľúbila si, že ak prežije, porozpráva svoj príbeh z Osvienčimu, aby sa už niečo podobné nikdy nezopakovalo. Lily has dedicated her life to sharing her astonishing story so that the world would never again descend into such depths. All the horror that happened to Lily and her family and so many others could not be imagined by those who have not been there but we shall never forget…My own experience of those shocking happenings was a photo in a local german paper 10 years ago.

I can’t even fully wrap my mind around everything Lily had to go through in life, I’m in awe about her strength, bravery and her outlook in life. There she promises herself to not only survive Hitler’s hell, but she would tell her story to the world for those who could not.The beauty and optimism of Lily’s words are a light in a world that needs to hear her story now more than ever. I feel like I’ve learned A LOT while reading it and I plan to continue learning and telling people about it. Keď sa potom jej pravnuk Dov Forman rozhodol využiť sociálne médiá, aby vystopoval rodinu tohto vojaka, deväťdesiatšesťročná Lily sa odrazu ocitla na titulkách po celom svete.

The backstory is a friend told me this book existed, but it wasn't being sold in the United States yet.

For our generation, we can hope for a utopian future - a world in which we learn from atrocities, where hatred and racism no longer exist. We owe it to every Holocaust victim, and survivor like Lily, to educate new generations about the horrors of that atrocity so it can never be allowed to happen again.
