Because whether or not you actually believe in ghosts is not a requirement to appreciate one of the oldest subgenres in film. Featuring well drawn teenage characters and nightmarish effects, The Fades offered an essentially British take on the apocalypse in a suburban setting – with some gory flesh-eating thrown in for good measure. Watching horror on television often provides our first scary viewing experience, whether it’s chancing upon a film late at night or the classic practice of watching Doctor Who from behind the sofa.

This is a ghost story, but they are the ghosts in a movie that seems as though it was brought to life by a legitimate madman.In fact, the one big problem with The Others, an otherwise alluring piece of horror craftsmanship, is that it never seems more substantial than mere mimicry, like a magician’s apprentice showing off all the master’s old tricks.

A team of scientists take up residence in a mansion as they experiment with a new sound recording format, but programmer Jill (Jane Asher) sees the ghost of a woman and soon members of the team are disturbed by the sound of screaming. Both of those are excellent, yet Milland, Ruth Hussey, and Donald Crisp give us very human, very reasonable responses to the increasingly-strange events going on around them.

The interior of Sam and Molly's loft is a reproduction of the home and studio of artist Michele Oka Doner, built from plans she provided because she declined to allow filming in her loft. Watch if: You want to see a very unique blend of special effects, gothic horror, and supernatural slapstick. Even then, the movie is kind of a mess, but it gets a lot of strength from committed performances by Margot Kidder and James Brolin, as well as haunted house stylings that lend the movie an odd credibility.

There are a number of consistent themes throughout this anthology, one of the most visually stunning horror movies of all time. Of course it's a cheesy Hallmark movie and you need to suspend disbelief but I got kick out of a storyline that wasn't the usual predictable girl leaves her corporate job for a tree lot attendant back home.Poltergeist is also another good example of a ghost story in which some of the scariest parts consist of things we are largely left to imagine. With its body horror preoccupations, this episode falls squarely within the realm of horror and will have you wondering about the power of superfoods.
