Description

I loved the characters, their chemistry at the beginning of the book had me hooked. The plot is VERY interesting and I actually wish I had a bit more of it, IF it was executed better. My problem, that made reading this book a little painful, was the time transitions. I had to re-read a couple of times to understand if the current scene was taking place in the past or the present.

There's some mystery about the couple, Julie and Ian O'Dale. A tragedy has led to Julie leaving her career as a real estate agent and it seems they have lost a daughter. The silence that engulfs them is grief unexpressed. They are in a state, hanging on by a thread, between existing and living fully, between being parents and not having a living child. This book was produced by Chris Lavergne and Noelle Beams with art direction and design by KJ Parish. Special thanks to Bianca Sparacino for creative editorial direction and Isidoros Karamitopoulos for circulation management. A twisted psychological thriller that alternates chapters between then (memories from her past) to now (events she views as a ghost). This was brilliant and addictive. friends, Rom and Magnolia, find a portal in their town and things start to get interesting after that. Magnolia loves collecting lost things and Rom is a helpless geek who I was infatuated with the entire story. I miss them so much already that it's insane. This was one of the books that made me want to reread it again as soon as I finished it. (I just might!) So, I have a soft spot for any story that uses ghosts/spirits in an interesting way, and Somewhere In Between scratches that itch.

While Darla sounds like a sassy teenager and refers to herself as a "dead white girl," she realizes she can't move on until everyone she loves lets her go. Magnolia describes it as " Because when things change, they become easier to forget about. It makes me feel like that could happen to me", she told him. "I don't ever want to be forgotten"". It's a good thing the blurb is there because, just like Magnolia and Rom, I didn't realize they were altering reality either every time they entered the portal. It does make sense now, though, as far as anything can make sense in this book. Here is a novel that I received for review by Caitlin Press. This review will also be on the blog tour for this novel, so welcome aboard! I will put the synopsis here, then I will talk about it because this is what this is for: Pseudo-punk Magnolia and underachieving gamer-geek Rom are two unlikely friends who only hang out during their walks home together after school. When they find the a portal that leads to different worlds, they use the “in-between place” as an escape from their lives in high school, then later, after college. This book has many loop-holes but despite of that, it has soothed me and I loved reading it. This is obviously not for everyone, and if anyone told me the ending before, I would have thought that it's not for me.

Meet Amara, an ordinary twenty-eight-year-old woman trying to navigate her way through life. Amara is a full time carer for her mum, her life isn' t easy but is fairly routine, until one night. She joins her friends at an exclusive BDSM club, somewhere she hasn' t been for so long. I don't think I can categorically and enthusiastically recommend this book to everyone, as in, "Even if you think this isn't your thing, try it anyway! Let it blow your mind!" Because that's where the comparisons with Eternal Sunshine need to stop. Even if you don't think Eternal Sunshine is your cup of tea, you should watch it anyway. Let it blow your mind and make you cry and frustrate and enrage and touch you. Whether you get 20% of it or 95%, you'll be enriched. I'm not sure Somewhere In Between has quite that much substance to it; nor do I think you'll be more-enriched-than-frustrated if you only get 20% of it. I think it's the whole coming of age thing, with which I am still struggling myself, that's so well depicted throughout the book. The whole reluctance towards change, and sometimes taking a mental pause and realizing everything HAS changed, even though you were fighting to keep things the way they are...were. It can be frightening sometimes! The author, Donna Milner, is courageous in allowing this silence rather than filling it with activity. And one could say the couple is courageous in being with what is. The land, and the couple's silence, hold much more than first seen. One night the sky appears "like an electrical charged curtain" with the aurora borealis, the northern lights. I was sent a copy of this book by the author in exchange of an honest review. All opinions stated are mine.

A Note From the Publisher

I love a good mystery, and this one kept me guessing. Above all, however, this is a book about families and human relationships. Now before this turns into 'My Dear Diary', I have to say there's something about the name Zane that annoys me to no end. Especially if it's the name of a non-caring drug-dealing boyfriend. Then again, it might just be that mostly. I just find it excruciatingly painful to watch or read about women who are together with a guy like that and are still desperately trying to win his love by any means. Bah.

Advance Praise

How did this happen? Did they die? Who? What? WHY THIS AND WHY THAT AND BLABLABLA... THEN THIS BOOK IS DEFINITELY NOT FOR YOU. Despite it all though the one responsible for her death remains a mystery, glimpses of hidden hate within the characters belying an ending that tears the heart out and leaves it in tatters. Hosmer's ability to touch on real family drama and what one will endure for the sake of their children, paints life into these ordinary people who could live down the street from any one of us. While Darla shares the past story, Julie is living in the unfolding present. She walks the land in silence and sits in silence with the tenant who lives in a cabin on the ranch: Virgil Blue. She learns of spirit animals and symbols. As angry as I was reading this book, I HAD TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HER! I was up rage reading really late. You get a very realistic look at what it’s like being married to a narcissist while also battling depression and the isolation that usually goes along with that. Even though it's a challenging read, I found myself having to put little effort into following the story. I still can't tell you what happened exactly, but I went with the flow and finished it in two reading sessions. Not to sound like an overly spiritual Sue or anything, but I guess I just 'felt' it. Halfway through the book, I even had to cry a little, something which happens rarely while reading, not even when one of my favourite characters dies.
