The Eminence in Shadow, Vol. 1 (light novel)". Yen Press. Archived from the original on April 23, 2021 . Retrieved April 23, 2021. Other than that, though, this is pretty much perfect. Cid manages to take the typical girls-throwing-themselves-at-him scenarios and barely notice. As he puts it, he's been busy stripping things out of his life so he can focus entirely on his singular goal. If it's something a cool master in the shadows would do, he totally wants in. But overall, this volume wasn't as good as previous ones. I really didn't need a whole 'nother world for the MC to interact with again when this isekai world still hasn't been fleshed out, and he didn't need yet another member of his harem when there's so many characters that just don't get spotlights (for example, Alexis/Iris were not in the volume at all as far as I could tell). The author just needed to focus on the characters he already has rather than keep introducing new ones, and the series is at its best when doing silly comedic things rather than try to be dark or action-based with riffraff weak beasts and filler enemies.

Oricon (in Japanese). October 4, 2022. Archived from the original on March 6, 2023 . Retrieved March 9, 2023.Not the hero. Nor the last boss. I'm talking about those existences that work their interference and flex their true strength only from the shadows.

I did feel this volume was weaker overall. The comedy of the MC's chuunibyou aspects wasn't as strong because in the latter half, he and Beta go to the real world fantasy Japan, and the plot points there are just not interesting to me. Yes, there's some evil Alliance and evil beasts, but the beasts can't think or interact with the MCs, so you don't get the same humorous reactions that the Cult of Diablos members gave. Then the Alliance is not fleshed out as to who they are and why they sent a spy in/their goals/etc. The MC being OP is also not as exciting or cool because relative to these weak humans, even a regular knight from the isekai world would be a threat anyway. I meditated Buddhist-style, I meditated under waterfalls, I meditated quietly, I fasted, I mastered yoga, I converted, I searched for spirits, I prayed, I even affixed myself to a cross. This is just pure and hilarious power fantasy, but rather than in the bright spotlight we're lurking in the shadows, hunting shadows. But unlike those children who adored heroes, mine was not a short-lived passion. It was something much deeper, something that burned from the depths of my heart, and it continuously propelled me forward. It's a Web Novel, c'mon. You can't expect the world from a project like this, so it will not be affecting my final score. But going off of the Light novels art style, I can't say that anything stood out to me. All of the characters looked how I expected them too, with my reactions going as "wild" as "oh so she had blue hair'. I mean the style that they chose definitely suits the style of the novel and story. No complaints here! Just wasn't as face slapping as it could have been. The anime’s loyalty to the original light novel source material has been a source of comfort to fans, as it ensures an authentic and immersive narrative journey. in Japanese). Kadokawa Shoten. Archived from the original on October 19, 2022 . Retrieved April 27, 2021. Have you ever heard of Poe’s Law? Here’s a little definition if you haven’t, Poe’s Law is that without a clear indication of the author’s intent the parody of something extreme can be mistaken for the real thing and if a real thing sounds extreme enough it can be mistaken for a parody. Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute falls exactly into this, if I wasn’t told like a dozen times by multiple people in social media groups that talk only about Light Novels and other places then I would fail to know that this thing is supposed to be a parody, after all, it plays
