Perfectly fine Glenfarclas, without any sulphur, it’s a bit rougher than I would like considering the age, but it’s no wonder at 60%... Not that it’s bad, but doesn’t fit into my flavour preference Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us. Fruity, nutty, sherried profile. What’s not to like about this? Some might say the proof (120), but that’s easily fixed with a splash of water if it’s too much. Others might say the price, but then all whisky is expensive these days, and it’s only getting more so. So I ask again… what’s not to like?

Strength is also a selling point for other whiskies. There’s been a recent spate of indie bottlings at dizzyingly high ABVs, achievable only because the casks have been filled higher than the typical filling strength of 63.5% ABV. Some, like the Bunnahabhain sherry butts bottled by Signatory and van Wees, might have sold well anyway, but the ABVs hitting as high as 68.9% no doubt helped. Other indie bottlings from high strength cask fillers, like bottlings of Glenallachie, Glenrothes, and Tomintoul, had less of a distillery premium but still sold briskly at north of 66% ABV. If 60% is Glenfarclas turned up to 10, these go to 11. More is more and more is better.

Hazelnuts, leather, dried dark fruit, cocoa, dried orchard fruit, citrus peels, butterscotch, copper, and strawberry shortcake. Palate: Silken, spicy and peppery oak. Almond, praline, hazelnut, dried peels, fruity. Touch of Armagnac, hint of rancio perhaps? I received a bottle of this today and have had a few drams from it. The most striking aspect of this whisky is the intense driness. I don't think I have experienced that in a single malt or indeed any whisky before. This has a very thin mouthfeel. No oiliness at all. Bizarre. Over the last day I have been 'actively oxygenating" the 105. I started this practice some time ago. I shake the bottle vigorously to get as much of the liquid bubbling as possible, then take the Cork out and leave it for an hour. Then I repeat the process a few times.

The nose is... sharp! It has almost a vinegarry sharpness but without nastiness. I feel my bottle badly needs to wake up. On the nose: Starts with a strikingly malty aroma. More lime juice, as well as stewed stone fruit, chalk, orange marmalade, and yellow sandwich mustard. The wood here is better integrated and more balanced than the 15 year old. You can see from the entry bottlings through to the high end ones, Glenfarclas spend time making whisky, just whisky. None of the Macallan marketing gush for these guys. So much so, I flipped my Macallan folio and treated myself to the 22yr old 105 Glenfarclas. The sherry really peaks through here in a way that makes me think of all the great, old, Glenfarclas I’ve enjoyed. A dash of this whisky can be great in baking, compote, and desserts. Its sweetness and strength work well there.I am not privy to the 105 recipe but I doubt the part with the bourbon casks. Not to say that there are no bourbon casks at Glenfarclas distillery but the overwhelming part is sherry casks there. Glenfarclas 105 is a superb cask strength whisky, with a history that can be traced to 1968. When the original incarnation was released that year, Glenfarclas became the first distillery to release a barrel proof single malt whisky.

After doing this, the 105, like most whiskies, has transformed. However the change has been profound with this particular whisky. What more can you ask for : single malt at 60%+ sherry cask maturation not finishing + very affordable 1L bottle, can't go wrong with 105. My mind immediately went to Speyside, specifically to sherried malts. I personally enjoy this flavor profile. More importantly, I find it appeals to the palate of the casual Scotch drinker, someone for whom a glass of whisky is an occasional indulgence rather than an everyday treat. Speaking in broad generic terms, the fruity and nutty richness corresponds to what people think of when they think of “good whisky.”

On the nose: Candied nuts, lime juice, zucchini bread, roasted marshmallows, green grapes, whole cloves, and a gently smoky-woody note that tips into a green astringency.Really interesting, bold whisky. One glass will do, not a session whisky. But I love it. So much going on. By shopping this brand, you’re supporting supply chains that prioritise community and worker wellbeing. Each one is an overachiever for the age and price, with the 21 year old being the best value for money among the three. They’re sherried, but not sherry bombs given the relatively low bottling strength. The subtlety works in their favor, allowing some novel nuances to come to the fore.
