To understand how an emotional disconnect can create devastating physiological and interpersonal effects, scientists are looking to the brain. By stimulating the brain with magnetic pulses and observing how electric current then travels through neural tissue, researchers have found that people who are high versus low in alexithymia differ in the way their brain's two hemispheres communicate. Highly alexithymic individuals do not appear to transfer information between the two sides of the brain as well as people who rate lower in this trait. These individuals, therefore, may struggle to integrate various types of information, such as emotional cues. Similarly, in recent years there has been a growing conversation about autism in people who identify outside of the male-female gender binary , generating increasing research about the experience of gender diverse autistic people . Such developments have been immeasurably valuable in helping to challenge the narrative that autism is a white middle-class male condition and have served to widen understandings of autism, to better accommodate and support those excluded by this archetype. Monegasque mini-mes! Prince Albert and Princess Charlene's twins, Gabriella and Jacques, eight, don almost... Gender norms can add another layer of environmental influence. Traditional gender roles generally discourage men from paying attention or assigning importance to their emotions. This tendency has led researchers such as Ronald F. Levant of the University of Akron to coin the concept of “normative male alexithymia,” in which society socializes young men to become emotionally stunted. He observes that men may develop a nonpathological variant of the alexithymia trait. Some data support this position: in 2008, for instance, Arizona State University psychologists found that Mexican-American men who exhibited more machismo—an outlook that endorses aggressive hypermasculinity—also had higher alexithymia scores.

That olfactory encounter essentially yanked intact positive memories of my father to the forefront of my mind. It reminded me that, even though my father had died, he’d also lived. And lived well. Nothing could ever take that away, and for the first time in weeks I felt like the pall of grief I’d been surrounded by may not be a permanent thing after all. All thanks to the often-overlooked power of smell. A lot of his feelings didn't 'make sense'. He felt ashamed that he'd been unable to cry at the funeral and puts this down to his childhood socialisation, the messages he'd learnt about what it means to be a man. He knew about the so-called five stages of grief ‒ denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance – but had not expected to feel all of them at once. He didn't understand the anger he felt when friends told him they wished there was something they could do. 'Being angry at people trying to help is irrational,' he says, 'but emotions don't have to make sense.' So, for my family’s sake, I had to swallow my pain as best I could. What other option was there? Nothing and nobody seemed able to shift the headful of roiling emotions I was experiencing. However, about a month after Dad’s passing, I was walking through my suburban Cardiff neighbourhood for my daily exercise, trying and failing to churn through my bleak and weighty emotions, when I passed a nondescript front door. I caught a whiff of secondhand cigarette smoke from some unknown and unseen neighbour who’d presumably returned indoors just before I strolled by. Normally, given my established dislike of smoking, this would make me recoil. Only this time, it didn’t. Instead of repulsed, I actually felt… better? However, over the last 20 years or so the tendency to neglect ignorance has changed, especially in several debates at the intersection of ethics and epistemology. This may come as a surprise, as one might think that ignorance is simply the absence of knowledge and that since the philosophical literature displays an extensive discussion on knowledge, ignorance does not deserve significant philosophical attention. However, it turns out to be philosophically challenging to spell out exactly what ignorance is and that even if it is absence of knowledge, ignorance merits philosophical attention of its own in a wide variety of philosophical debates.
