From the heartbreak of failed IVF and the often-uncomfortable realities of being pregnant with twins to the horrific truths about childbirth or in Chloe’s case caesarean sections, there is very little Jen Brister doesn’t cover in her account of becoming parents. This is going to sound very earnest, but the absolute best thing about touring is having an audience who have invested their money and their evening to spend with me. I am never not amazed and grateful that people turn up. I did enjoy Brister’s snide comments on preachy parents and mumfluencers- as an absolute cynic, I’m here for that! Catherine moves to Dublin, she has a baby called Cyril and she gives him up for adoption. The book is basically about their two lives, her life and his life, and they’re both treated as outcasts. Because she never got married but had a child that she had to give up for adoption, and Cyril is this boy who grows up with his adoptive parents, who were really eccentric – one’s an author who chain smokes.

From that premise, Jen Brister gives a lot in this book - a lot of honesty, a lot of laughter (some of it fairly dark), a lot of appraisal both of herself and her girlfriend Chloe, the process of IVF, the whole tedious conversation about the family dynamic initiated by cishet folk on a monotonous and regular basis, about the myths, the truths, the bullshit woo-pressures of being a parent to two kids simultaneously, and about doing it a) slightly later on the human energy curve than might be ideal (she was 40 when the kids were born, and is strikingly honest about the energy-sapping reality of that), and b) while struggling to turn herself from a barely self-supporting circuit comic and responsibility-repellant into a savings-possessor, known name in comedy and responsibily-facer-upper. I never remember jokes. Saying that, my son told me a hilarious joke about a helicopter and some jelly … No, it’s gone. Augustus Melmotte is a fraudulent foreign financier who preys on dissolute nobility - using charm to tempt the weak into making foolish investments in his dubious schemes. But as Melmotte climbs higher in society, his web of deceit begins to unravel. As a woman who is heading inexorably towards 50, can I just take this opportunity to say to any young person who might be having a shit time and wondering if this is it. It isn’t. It gets better. My 20s were awful, my 30s weren’t much better, but my 40s have been great. I can’t wait to be 50 because I know it’s going to be my finest decade. Life can and will get better. You have so much to look forward to.
