First off, there’s the album itself: Taking the excellent 2015 remaster and putting it on both CD and 180-gram vinyl (cut at half-speed and direct-to-metal mastering for the audiophiles), this reissue also includes a new Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround-sound mix on Blu-ray, a fantastic way to hear Alex Lifeson’s riffs pried apart from the synths and delivered as though the sound were enveloping you as you listen. The Blu-ray disc also includes four bonus videos. These are a brand new clip for “YYZ” and three remastered, vintage promo videos, for “Tom Sawyer,” “Limelight,” and “Vital Signs.” In another first, all of the vinyl has been cut via half-speed Direct to Metal Mastering (DMM) on five 180 gram audiophile LPs.

Touring had taught Rush the interior design of their own material. Moving Pictures is the result. Released in 1981, their eighth studio album—reissued in honor of its 40th anniversary in a sumptuous multidisc/multi-LP set—mastered concision. Instead of three- and four-minute things like “Fly By Night,” “The Trees,” and “Closer to the Heart” acting like smoke breaks between epics, the ten-minute “The Camera Eye” is the anomaly amid a suite of often severe tunes with choruses and middle-eights.
