Theresa ton of traumatic events happening to the main characters , yet, no change to show they affected the characters. Unlike Flanagan’s Haunting series on Netflix, Midnight Mass isn’t embedded in the ghost story aesthetics the writer-director is known for. There is a different sort of insidious nature to the threats here. Wherever faith and religion are, fundamentalism and fanaticism are not far behind. Flanagan does express skepticism over the human-created idea of “God’s plan” early on in Midnight Mass. If he’d leaned harder into that skepticism, perhaps the series’ premise would have more heft. But it seems he would rather pay less attention to what scares and disillusions us (even though in 2021 there’s so much to scare and disillusion us) and spend more time on what connects and unites us. I can see where others might find comfort in that. Paul’s evangelical energy gives Bev renewed purpose and justification for her lifelong superiority complex, along with an excuse to act out her revulsion for anyone she deems unworthy of God’s love. She’s not fazed at all when she learns the dark supernatural reason for his strange ability to perform miracles; instead, she’s eager to bring on the apocalypse. She and the priest begin organizing their band of believers to make it happen. The internal monologues, debates, and discussions Flanagan had with himself throughout this drawn-out process all ended up going into the show.

But telling this story in seven installments instead of the ten it took to unspool Hill House and Bly Manor makes for a tighter and more satisfying experience overall. It’s particularly poignant in its reflection of the current cultural moment, as humanity chases cures for illness and certain factions distort any biblical verse to justify selfish, destructive behavior. I wanted to give this 4 stars, but I went with 3 because of the ending. It was good concerning a battle and there was hope for the future. But I was annoyed because two good guys died at different times in the book. Critics praised Flanagan's direction, the performances, and the series' unique approach to the vampire genre. Kristen Baldwin of Entertainment Weekly gave the series an "A−" grade and wrote that it "isn't perfect, but it is a keenly affecting, beautifully acted reflection on death, faith, guilt, addiction, and the power of free will." [22] Judy Berman of Time gave it a very positive review, calling it Flanagan's best series yet and praised the performances of Zach Gilford, Kate Siegel and especially Hamish Linklater. [23] Jen Chaney of Vulture called Linklater's performance "phenomenal" and believed he elevated the series to "moments of greatness," writing: "he speaks as if he's discovering his way through every sentence and wants you to come with him." [24] David Fear of Rolling Stone wrote, "the three-layers-deep work that Linklater is doing over these seven episodes is extraordinary." Fear also praised Flanagan's directing, stating that "It’s the way that [he] carefully sets everything into place in anticipation of a bigger-picture nightmare that makes the payoffs so satisfying." [25] Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times called the series "the best Stephen King story Stephen King never wrote" and stated, "even though this is an original work from Flanagan, it feels like a high-level adaptation of a particularly haunting King novel." [26] Anyway, yes, vampires. They're the threat in Midnight Mass, and at least they're of the nasty type. No sparkly ones to be found here. Unfortunately, other than this admirable fact, there's little to recommend this one over the hundreds of other such reads out there. Thrilling and horrific, with a dose humorous irony. Wilson's Midnight Mass is a return to the grisly, purely evil side of vampiric lore. And it's a welcome addition to a genre inundated with romanticized depictions.Tallerico, Brian (September 24, 2021). "Midnight Mass". RogerEbert.com . Retrieved October 4, 2021. The combination of fear, misinformation, and disenfranchisement reveals itself as a potent mix that can lead to unspeakable acts under the guise of religious ideology. It’s a bleak idea that resonates with our present-day reality. But remember this is a Mike Flanagan joint: As dark and troubling as things get, he makes sure to imbue his characters with love and empathy, leaving traces of hope along the way. Midnight Mass is no different.

Langley, Jonty (October 28, 2021). "Midnight Mass: The Christian horror series with a challenging message for the Church". Premier Christianity . Retrieved January 12, 2022. Mr. Wilson has been on my radar for several years, most notably because he wrote The Keep, which is on several best Horror novels lists (and which I have not read as yet), but he was awarded the World Horror Convention Grand Master award in 2005. Despite al this, Midnight Mass was the first book by him I have read. It will not be the last. After Sarah, Erin, and Hassan burned the church and rec center, the remaining congregation, now all vampires, realized there was nowhere to go when the sun came up. With most now realizing all the horrors they'd committed during the night, even having killed their own loved ones, they joined together in song. Led by Ed and Annie, the town sang the hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee" (a song reportedly played by the Titanic's string ensemble as the ship sank), echoing Monsignor Pruitt's sermon from the second episode when he more or less subtweeted his entire plan, saying with fervor "that's what it means to have faith, that in the darkness, in the worst of it, in the absence of light and hope, we sing." In the case of allegorical explorations of love and grief, like Hill House, this dissonance can pay off wonderfully, because the sharper the horror, the stronger the healing catharsis can be. But in Midnight Mass, the precarious balance between horror and hope that characterizes all of Flanagan’s work finally tilted in the wrong direction, at least for me.King, Darryn (September 24, 2021). "Mike Flanagan Explores His Private Horrors in 'Midnight Mass' ". The New York Times . Retrieved October 2, 2021. Being that weirdo, who was already a burgeoning horror fan, who looked around when they said this is the blood of Christ and if you drink it you'll live forever. Looked around and said, 'Does anyone else think this Vampiric?' And being told by parents and teachers to please stop bringing that up." Let God Sort Them Out On July 1, 2019, Netflix announced that Midnight Mass would be a seven-episode miniseries, with Flanagan serving as its writer, director and executive producer. [11] In February 2020, Zach Gilford, Kate Siegel and Hamish Linklater were announced as lead roles for the series. [12] As my Year of the Vampire continues, I’m searching for more fangy stories. Midnight Mass was included in the Audible membership and strangely enough, I’ve yet to read any Wilson. This book wouldn’t encourage me to seek out another offering. Those conversations were so inseparable in my head, that this show was always where they were just kind of dumped,” he said. “It’s where they lived as a record of my perspective of sobriety through various points of my life — in the full grips of it, in the denial of it, and in the acceptance of it.”

MIDNIGHT MASS, on Netflix: Mike Flanagan has created a dense, beautifully photographed terror tale that climbs to a high pitch of horror by the 7th and last episode. I believe it starts in 10 days. Baldwin, Kristen (September 23, 2021). "Midnight Mass review: A deeply affecting tale of faith gone wrong". Entertainment Weekly . Retrieved October 4, 2021. For creator/writer/director Mike Flanagan, the thematic ties between religion and vampire lore have fascinated him for a long while. In an interview with IGN, he spoke about his preoccupation with "what happens when we die." The best vampire book EVAH! One day F. Paul I hope you will let us visit Father Dan and his niece and see how they are doing in the world of vampires. If you want to read a good romance book with no sparkly vampires, just pure true evil ones, this is the book. The two main characters are a disgraced priest who was falsely accused of child molestation just before the end times, a nun who secretly loved him and his best friend a rabbi. Add in the priest's militant vegan feminist niece and it sounds like you have a set up for a joke. No punch line here, just fantastic and interesting characters. Wilson develops them well, and tests their various faiths as the world ends around them. The typical Flanagan fare wraps poignant stories of family, community, and unremitting optimism around horror-filled centers. This combo has made him a perfect collaborator with Netflix, the home of most of Flanagan’s recent work. In all of the films and series he’s written for the network so far, Flanagan has created tales whose horror plots draw broad audiences and whose rosy themes appeal directly to middle America. Flanagan’s Netflix partnership has also given him an enormous audience; The Haunting of Hill House, arguably his most successful project, was one of the most-binged series of 2018.
