Description

It's no secret that here at Kinkerbox we love Shibari, But we know getting started with shibari can feel very un-nerving ... and where do you even start?? So, still reading? Good! You shouldn't be scared off, but you should understand the risks and take safety seriously! So now, lets talk about how you bloomin' do the fun stuff shall we? Shibari isn’t something you can jump into head first without doing some required reading, learning and pre-sex communication first. It does literally involve rope after all, so safety is an important consideration. Ultimately, Shibari is about consensually tying each other up for fun and sexual pleasure. "It shouldn’t be intimidating or aggravating," she says. There are plenty of shibari dojos where you can find a partner if you do not have one. In them, you will have an expert leading your scene or teaching you how to do it. Doing shibari for the first time with someone you have just met, without any type of supervision from a professional, is not a great idea. The reason is that you do not really know if your potential partner is trustworthy or not. Or if they know what they are doing. This knowledge comes with time: you will have this exchange organically until when you know your partner better. Shibari for Beginners: the Negotiations

One of the most important aspects in bondage is trust. The reason is that the top will restrict the bottom, leaving them vulnerable. Similarly, if you are into this submission, the rigger will be taking control of your body. Because of this, it is very important to trust your partner completely—or not to practice this type of activitiesat all. Get enough rope so you can reach your full potential. Get enough rope so that your partners can experience how amazing you are. Body Harnesses (sometimes called a Karada or Tortoise Shell tie) create convenient securing points for other ties and are also handy for wearing rope under everyday clothing. Demonstrated here using a 50ft length of 6mm rope. There will always be some sort of risk when playing with ropes,” Marika notes, “but as long as you do your research and communicate clearly with your partners, you should be able to mitigate these risks and create a fun and enriching experience. Take the time to establish and update your own personal risk profile — an evaluation of an individual’s willingness and ability to take risks and what they are comfortable with and be transparent with whoever you are tying with," she adds. Marika Leila Roux, co-founder and creative director of Shibari Study, who offer Shibari classes, says "Shibari is a way of communicating through rope and that makes it magical. It’s not just about memorising certain patterns or knots; instead, shibari allows you to use things like how you handle your rope and different ways of using speed, tension and tempo to create different sensations and even emotions for your partner (or yourself)." She says that using rope in a way that’s playful, sensual, tender and a little challenging can help us examine our needs, desires and intentions as well as those of our partners. How do I get started with Shibari?Contrasts are central to Shibari: intricate geometric patterns with the natural curves of the body, rough rope against soft skin and vulnerability side by side with strength. The practice can also lead to a trance-like experience for the tied partner and a rush of adrenalin for the artist, or rigger. Shibari is mostly about communication. So, if you have good communication with your partner and are trying to strengthen your relationship, this discipline is a great idea. In reality, the BDSM community centres play of any kind around consent, respect and communication. And that’s especially true with Shibari. What is Shibari? This mostly-SFW infographic looks at 12 popular sexual misconceptions that continue to endure – from the importance of penis size to average frequency and duration.”] Midori explains that, outside of Japan, in the past decade or so, Shibari has gone viral. With that increase in popularity, came some criticism of Westernised interpretations of the craft, along with "particular narratives about Shibari’s history."

The Single Limb Cuff in this video was done in a single 10 foot piece of 8mm. The Basic Chest Harness supports the chest and creates an ideal anchor point. Shibari takes dedication and patience to master, but you will develop a skill that can lead to a deeper sense of trust and a greater bond between you and your partner. The act of tying can be very sensual for both Rigger and Model. It's initmate, it involves trust and communication. It also involves closeness, as the Rigger wraps the rope, and threads the rope to make knots, bodies can brush, breath can be felt, fingers trace the lines of the rope on the body as they even out the pattern and paying attention to the skin underneath. For the model the sensation of pressure of the rope and the pulling of arms and legs can be arousing as you feel yourself giving control over to your rigger. All you really need to be able to bring bondage to the bedroom is a simple handcuff-style tie, Syonda says. "This is called a 'double column' tie—two loops around two 'columns' (usually two limbs) that doesn’t collapse or self tighten." The single column tie is a way to tie a rope around, you've guessed it, a single column ... such as an arm, a waist, legs, a bedpost, a loop in the ceiling. It's simple (once you've done it a few times) and it looks elegant and aesthetics are super important in Shibari - it's an art form! Hojojutsu is the grandfather to modern shibari. Many of the techniques from hojojutsu make you a faster and more effective shibari artist. As a beginner, don’t dive into intricate patterns right away. There are numerous resources, including books and online tutorials, that offer guidance on basic knots. Begin with simpler knots that are easy to learn and execute. Remember, the primary goal at this stage is to explore if bondage appeals to both you and your partner. Wrists and Ankles

So Rope, at Kinkerbox we use 10m quality jute ropes. Why jute? Quite simply because they never stretch. Please never use a regular rope for shibari, the stretch in cottom ropes can make knots impossible to untie, and you have less control over tightness on your model. Always double up your rope, so your 10m rope equals 5m of material to play with (and then you add another rope on). I realize I'm both the guy selling you the rope and also the guy recommending you buy more rope. However, I'm writing kink books and selling rope out of love, not for money. If I wanted to get rich, I'd have written a fad-diet book. Shibari for beginners: have you ever thought about practicing this art with your partner? Nowadays more people than you can imagine are practicing it. Or, at the very least, reflecting whether doing it or not. In general, people do not usually have any idea of what it involves. The Most Basic of the Basics: a Definition Not sure what width or length rope is right for you? This should help you determine the differences between the various hemp rope sizes. We offer 4mm, 6mm and 8mm rope in various lengths across eight fantastic colors.Begin your Shibari journey by tying your partner’s wrists and ankles. This foundational practice allows you to establish a sense of comfort and trust before moving on to more complex ties. Additionally, consider using “columns”– tying your partner to a chair or a piece of furniture. Look around your bedroom with a rope master’s eye to find suitable anchor points. Safety The number one rule for tying safely is to ALWAYS have safety shears within reaching distance,” Sydona says. “The second is to be able to communicate to your partner well, both as both a top [person doing the tying] and bottom [person being tied]. Being able to communicate explicitly and coherently before, during, and after a session is what keeps it as safe and enjoyable as possible.” Adapting hog ties for larger, broader, or less flexible folks is made easy by tying in a modular fashion. Shibari is not a game. Although you can definitely enjoy it and have fun with it, you must take it with respect. It is important to learn shibari, visit a place devoted to it, and take a workshop or an online course if you are planning to do it by yourself. Additionally, you should study basic anatomy because this BDSM activity has its risks. The Dojos This versatile body harness can be tied on any body with simple modifications. Tied here using 50ft of 6mm rope (tied using 4mm this makes great stealth-bondage under clothing). The versatility of rope makes it easy to create a custom-fit strap-on harness on the hips, or anywhere else on the body.
