Indications: Emollients are often used to help manage dry, itchy or scaly skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and ichthyosis.

It's a good idea to protect babies' hands and cheeks with an emollient before mealtimes to stop them getting sore from food and drink. Soya Bean Oil 83% w/w, Comperlan (Oleic Acid Diethanolamide), Macrogol Lauryl Ether (Laureth-4), Perfume, Propylene Glycol, Butylated Hydroxytoluene. Indications: Agreed GREY non formulary for NEW PATIENTS (APC Jan 2020). Other creams available as soap substitutes and leave on emollients.

Bath additives

They are useful on the skin around stomas, bedsores, and pressure areas in the elderly where the skin is intact Foam applicator 1ml or 3ml available from NHS Supply Chain at SFH and NUH (or also Pharmacy at SFH)- Cavilon 1ml applicator is replaced by Cutimed Protect 1ml applicator. Children under 1: Seek HCP advice before use. Adults, the elderly and children: As an emollient: Apply to the affected area as often as required. Smooth gently into the skin, following the direction of the hair growth. As a bath additive: Melt about 4g (roughly a teaspoonful) of Zeroderm Ointment in hot water in a suitable container. Then add to the bath ensuring that the water has sufficiently cooled before getting in. As a soap substitute: Take a small amount of Zeroderm Ointment from the tub, lather it under warm water and use as required when washing or in the shower. Pat skin dry. Date of preparation: Children under 1: Seek HCP advice before use. Adults: Add 15-20ml to a standard bath of warm water (8 inches deep). Immerse and cover the affected areas with the bath water and soak for 10-20 minutes. Pat dry with a towel. Infants and children: Add 5-10ml to a small bath or wash basin of water. Immerse and cover the affected areas with the bath water and soak for 10-20 minutes. Alternatively, repeatedly sponge over the affected areas. Pat dry with a towel. Use as often as required.
