Vigorous and eye-catching, Aubrieta deltoidea (Rock Cress) is a mat-forming, semi-evergreen perennial plant that produces delightful, vivid purple-red flowers in mid-late spring to early summer. Maintain a colourful garden all the way through winter with this versatile annual that thrives in cooler weather. Aubrieta excels as ground cover, low and trailing, planted between stepping stones, along pathways, or in the crevices of stone walls. Busy lizzies are a reliable summer flowering annual that’s guaranteed to put an impressive show in full sun or shade.Plants that grow in too much shade will lose their compact, mounded appearance, take on a leggy look, and have sparse flowers. This list was thoughtfully compiled by gardener Hannah Miller and reviewed by horticulturist Elizabeth Smith. My experience: I’ve grown both the taller and carpet varieties of Phlox, I’ve found both are easy to maintain and propagate.

I’ve noticed that aubrieta can form a hollow, bare crown if not pruned at all or not pruned correctly. This alpine member of the Brassica family needs full sun and dry conditions so is ideal to plant in the top of a wall where you will see it to its best advantage, cascading down the sides. If the plant has become straggly, over grown or bald in the centre, give it a hard prune cutting right back as in the image below.
