Jess recommends two types of dye: " Procion is my go to, it comes out on top with regards to bold results every time.

We spoke to Liverpool based tie-dye technician and artist Jess Birchall of Dyenasty Dyes to find out how to get started. There's one big no no Jess sees happen again and again: "The biggest mistake that people make, is getting too excited, untying and rinsing it before it's set. It does need warmth to set, but if it goes dry, which the sun would cause, it stops the dye from reacting. When using procion dye you will need to soak your items in a sodium carbonate solution before hand (for about 15 minutes).Doing it outdoors makes the clean up easier and less risky, but indoors is fine says Jess; "You just need a plastic sheet for covering for your surfaces, wear an apron or old clothes and definitely avoid dying over carpet. When adding dye the most fun thing about scrunch is you can just go crazy, you don't have to follow any pattern. Then pull it out and add band below it, however far apart you want the rings, and you just keep repeating that all the way down, depending how big you want the bullseye to be and with how many rings. The nineties saw a strong revival in mainstream fashion and now once again, the expressive DIY fun is everywhere. If you've used good quality dyes and fabric and done the process properly, you don't need to wash them in any special way to stop them from fading.

If you're only just starting out I recommend Dylon machine pods or sachets," says Jess; "They're extremely affordable if dying for fun and have the sodium carbonate already mixed in. You can follow the rings with the colour, or for those 90s style ones you can just apply the dye in the same way you would with the scrunch, you still get the patterns but the colour is wild. Avoid using a combination of brown, green and orange unless you're looking for a dull dark effect she says.

This whole t-shirt will be one big bullseye with striped rings, but you can do smaller bullseyes allover or as a centre piece. And, with dyes already containing sodium carbonate, once the powder and water are thoroughly mixed, you only have around half an hour to apply, so don't pre mix your dyes. Before taking the elastic bands off, rinse in luke-warm water till the water starts to run clear, and then remove the bands and rinse in cold water for a minute or two.
