You make the mistake of thinking you have to choose, that you have to do what you want, that there are conditions for happiness. What matters -- all that matter is -- is the will to happiness, a kind of enormous, ever-present consciousness. The rest women, art, success -- is nothing but excuses…. What are you up to? Tell me about yourselves and describe the sun to a miserable wretch who has no roots anywhere and who remains your faithful Zagreus said nothing. The rain had stopped, but in the sky night had replaced the clouds, and the darkness was now virtually complete in the room. Only the fire illuminated their gleaming faces. Zagreus, silent for a long time, stared at Patrice, and all he said was: ‘Anyone who loves you is in for a lot of pain ...’ and stopped, surprised by Mersault’s abrupt gesture. But later, that boyish laugh of Zagreus’ which had at first annoyed him caught Mersault’s attention and interest. Moreover the obvious jealousy which had provoked Mersault’s first judgement had disappeared as soon as he saw Zagreus. Once when Marthe quite innocently referred to the time she had known Zagreus, he advised her: ‘Don’t bother. I can’t be jealous of a man who doesn’t have his legs any more. If I ever do think about the two of you, I see him like some kind of big worm on top of you. And it just makes me laugh. So don’t bother, angel.’

a b " 'Happy Death Day' Ending: Director Shares Sequel Plans for Part 2". The Hollywood Reporter. October 15, 2017. I agree that the writing in Happy Death is less organised than in The Outsider, but it is livier and fresher and seems more autobiographical and depicts a lot more of Camus' lived life.It sets out its stool, has an agenda:how to get happiness? get money to buy the time that can lead to greater happiness.Because it's more of a willed performance, the structure is more improvised and awkward and deliberate but you don't get the excisions of The Outsider where the information surrounding the characters has been stripped away and it becomes mysterious and portentous. The character of Mersault seems more human in A Happy Death and we don't get the darkness of 'the arabs' or 'killing an arab' which makes Camus' position closer to the French colonists. In A Happy Death isn't he more of the working class l'homme moyen sensuel, hedonistic, believable, still able to murder, but the murder has a lighter tone to it and has a purpose, possibly aided by the victim,Roland Zagreus. This book, published after his death in 1972 is hardly ever spoken of.As you say it deserves to be better known.Incidently, A Happy Death (original title La mort heureuse) is a novel by absurdist French writer-philosopher Albert Camus. The existentialist topic of the book is the "will to happiness," the conscious creation of one's happiness, and the need of time (and money) to do so. It draws on memories of the author including his job at the maritime commission in Algiers, his suffering from tuberculosis, and his travels in Europe. All he could see now was a white patch where Marthe’s face was. ‘It’s the same as when we make love,’ he realized. You see,’ Claire says, as the lentils are brought on, too dry, and everyone eats in silence. When Claire does the cooking and tastes her food at the table, she always adds with a satisfied expression: ‘My goodness, that’s quite delicious!’ Patrice, who has his dignity, prefers to say nothing, until everyone bursts out laughing. This is certainly not Catherine’s day, for she lectures them all about reducing her office hours and asks someone to go with her to complain. Mersault ate quietly until Emmanuel started to tell Celeste how he had fought the battle of the Marne. ‘See, they sent us zouaves out in front ...’

Happy Death Day Shot An Original Ending That Made Test Audiences Furious". Cinema Blend. October 16, 2017 . Retrieved January 21, 2018. A Happy Death is a young and imperfect novel, but Camus the philosopher is already well-formed. I think this novel deserves much more attention than it typically receives. AN INTERNET READER COMMENTS: John Sharman Mutlu ölüm, Yabancı’da olduğu gibi yine varoluşçuluk üzerine dayalı ve bu düşünceleri karakterin ağzından aktaran, sürükleyici ve etkileyici bir roman.

That's the word that came to me very often during and after reading when I tried to express my feelings about this novel by Albert Camus. I had already been dazzled by this author's pen in The Fall and especially The Stranger when I wanted to discover the beginnings of Camus with what is often described as "the first version of The Stranger, "very imperfect by its author's admission. The first novel from the Nobel Prize-winning author lays the foundation for The Stranger, telling the story of an Algerian clerk who kills a man in cold blood. We are presently celebrating the “Year of St. Joseph” to commemorate the 150th anniversary of St. Joseph being solemnly declared Patron of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX. From May 1, 2020, through May 1, 2021, we, as a diocese, have committed to deepen our understanding of the person of St. Joseph and so to honor him, in a more profound way, as our guardian and protector. One very important way St. Joseph helps us, on our journey to heaven, is through his special gift of intercession as we prepare for our departure from our life here on earth. In the Roman Catholic culture in which I grew up, we were taught to pray for a happy death. For many Catholics at the time, this was a standard petition within their daily prayer: “I pray for a happy death.” Born in Algeria in 1913, Albert Camus published The Stranger-- now one of the most widely read novels of this century-- in 1942. Celebrated in intellectual circles, Camus was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957. On January 4, 1960, he was killed in a car accident.

From reserve, Mersault merely answered: ‘Yes, I don’t know what to do,’ and after a pause straightened up, walked to the window and added as he stared outside: ‘I feel like getting married, or committing suicide, or else subscribing to L’illustration. Something desperate, you know.’ Today, after the sunbathe, Catherine had gone to her office. ‘My dear Patrice,’ Rose announced, suddenly appearing, ‘I have some good news for you.’ The major said “Charge!” and we ran down into a kind of gully, only with trees in it. He told us to charge, but no-one was there. So we just marched right on, kept on walking. And then all of a sudden these machine-guns are firing right into us. We all fall on top of each other. There were so many dead and wounded that you could have rowed a boat across the blood in that gully. Some of them kept screaming “Mama!” Christ, it was awful.’Zagreus also gets a classic Nietzsche line: "Not the will to renounce, but the will to happiness." In both Zarathustra and Toward A Genealogy Of Morals Nietzsche is at pains to argue that the Christian ethic is one of denial of human instinct and power, not an embracing of life.
