Most of the work is done by your fingers. These are free and readily available, though you do not have a choice of size and the state of your own skin has a bearing on your work. Hand stripping is a grooming process that involves removing dead hairs from the coat by hand instead of clipping to keep the coat tidy and healthy. Usually completed twice a year in spring and autumn, it speeds up the natural process of growth and shedding. Carding knives come in many shapes and sizes, and many stripping knives can be used for carding by changing from a pulling to a raking technique. It’s more than I can explain in a single article. We go into the finer details in our Hand Stripping Masterclass. The process is somewhat given away by its name – stripping loose hair by hand. But it is not all that simple. Hand stripping is a type of grooming method that dog owners use to remove excess hair from their dog’s coat. The most common method of dog grooming is clipping, this method involves the use of a pair of electric clippers which cut or shave the top layer of hair on a dog’s coat. The difference between clipping and hand-stripping is that not only is hand-stripping done by hand, but it removes coat from the root (not just the top layer) so a new coat is able to grow in. Each time you clip a dog’s coat instead of hand stripping, you are just taking off the top layer of dead fur rather than removing it from the roots. As a result, the coat may become duller in texture and color with each clipping, which is why many people consider hand stripping to be preferable. Is it an ideal solution for every dog? Of course not, it all depends on the dog and the coat. For some dogs, it’s not just the best solution, but the only one as well.

What is Hand Stripping?

Okay, so maybe not everyone likes homework. With that in mind, let’s get it all out of the way and focus on this curious dog known as the Bichon Frise, French for “curly white lap dog.” Hey, the French are nothing if not a little bit literal. This dog can be considered a large toy dog and, while it looks similar to the Maltese, does have some distinctions that make it a breed in and of itself. And although the fluffy white coat can intimidate potential dog owners who don’t like the idea of a lot of grooming, the Bichon Frise is surprisingly low-maintenance, meaning that they’re not big shedders and won’t be a hamper on that roommate of yours with dog allergies. Maintain a healthy coat and skinon wired coat breeds by removing dead hair which in turn stops follicles becoming clogged and irritated. Grooming your dog at home using a dematting is much less expensive as compared to employing the service of a professional groomer. Aside from that, it is also less painful when you use a dematting tool at home.

Your dog has two layers coats – an undercoat (the soft under-layer of hair that insulates), and a coarse, protective outer layer called the guardcoat or top coat. The average pet will only need stripping every 3 to 6 months, however more frequent grooming will make for a more desirable “show coat”. Soft brush – This brush is extremely gentle on the skin of your dog’s face, which means it will leave them feeling clean and soft without scratching or irritating their fur like other brushes might do with more aggressive fibers used on dogs’ skin. Stripping knives: These specialised tools come in various sizes and shapes to cater to different coat types and lengths. It's important to choose a stripping knife that is appropriate for your dog's breed and coat condition. Usually a blue handle knife is for the body and the red handle is for the head area. Hand stripping is less stressful for you and your pet than other grooming methods, such as clipping. Saves Time

Dog Breeds in Need of Hand Stripping

Grooming coordinates with this cycle to manually remove dead and loose hairs, while also allowing us to shape the coat to appear more stylish. Because hand stripping removes the full length of each hair rather than just shearing off the ends, this can be avoided. Newer groomers are learning more and more about skin science and how bathing actually does help the dog’s skin.

Look closely at a stripping knife and you will see that it is indeed a blade with a row of teeth, the bases of which, if not used correctly, are sharp enough to cut the coat.A wonderful companion to those who have mild allergies, the Peekapoo is a true “Doodle” dog, which means he has a low- to non-shedding coat that won’t set you off into sneezes. But that’s not the only reason why the Peekapoo makes a great pet. Low-maintenance when it comes to their activity and grooming needs, and with a friendly, sweet temperament, the Peekapoo has a lot to offer to many pet owners. Seniors and retirees, as well as singles, will find this designer dog a perfect companion, but families with older children might also enjoy the Peekapoo’s goofy antics and eagerness to please.
