The picture started. Screen One was the largest viewing room in the whole Grand Theatre, its orchestral sound booming from all sides. Each seat was equipped with its own translation system, reading out the text that appeared alongside the silent film. The couple to Juliette’s left were wearing their earpieces, murmuring excitedly to each other as the lines filtered through in Chinese. Juliette didn’t need her earpiece, not just because she could read English, but because she wasn’t really watching the film. Her eyes, no matter how much she tried, kept wandering down. There have long been scholars and critics who read Shakespeare’s plays with a queer and trans lens, examining the bard’s use of gender-bending in his stories. While these characters’ identities may not have been accepted in the 1920s, what is the significance of including explicitly queer characters and a trans character in Gong’s adaptation? Explain your answer. Consider the main couples and their race, gender, and sexuality. What obstacles might they face (outside of a blood feud) to be together? Have you or anyone you know dated someone family or society did not approve of? What role should family and/or society play in the person you choose to be in a relationship with? Unfortunately, the two are going to have to set their differences aside once again. A new threat is emerging in their city. Between the monsters and the political upheaval, the heirs to Shanghai’s biggest rival gangs may be so distracted that they forget they’re supposed to be enemies. Content warnings I know you’re joking,” Juliette muttered, “but you might be right.” She pressed her pistol into her cousin’s hand and took off, calling over her shoulder, “Talk to the merchant for me! Merci!”

In this life and the next,’ Roma returned, ‘for however long our souls remain, mine will always find yours.” Shanghai is under siege in this captivating and searingly romantic sequel to These Violent Delights, which New York Times bestselling author Natasha Ngan calls “deliciously dark.”The year is 1927, and Shanghai teeters on the edge of revolution.Aft... Of course it was hard for him to hurt her now. It went against every fiber of his being. Every cell, every nerve—they had grown into place with one mantra: protect her, protect her.”

When I tell you that I was sure Our Violent Ends was going to be the death of me, I meant it, dear reader. The Nationalist Party leader instructs the Scarlets to kill all the Communists and to treat the White Flowers as such, risking annihilation of an entire group of people, including workers who have no affiliation, but could be caught at the wrong place and time. What is the impact of this action? Why do you think civilians, especially the working class, are so often casualties of war? Characters represent a diverse group, mostly from mainland China and several European countries. A positive representation of a same-sex romance. Once again, I think the pacing of the romance was great and felt completely believable for the characters. Definitely a highlight of this book. There are still a lot of other characters in the cast

wordwoonders and I are buddy reading #ourviolentends by @thechloegong to prepare for our ARCs of #foulladyfortune and this is how it’s going so far ♬ Cherrybonbon – Kyary Pamyu Pamyu The two are forced to work together, like in These Violent Delights, but in this book their parents are aware of it. Not just aware, they essentially force them into it. That adds another fun point of difference to the way things worked in book one. And, of course, eventually they have to give in to their feelings!

Roma is furious with Juliette. He may still love her, but he hates her just as much. If killing her is the only way to start healing from her betrayal, he knows that’s what he must steel himself to do. You were three paces away from the merchant,” she said. She was surprised her voice remained level. Ta ma de. There was one knife strapped to her leg, but in the time it would take to reach for it, she would be giving Roma plenty of time to shoot. “You left him just to find me? I’m flattered—” Don’t be a fool, Juliette scolded herself. She had tipped herself into this situation at full speed. She would not regret it. It was what had needed to be done. While Roma thinks he’s determined to kill Juliette, he still struggles when he actually gets an opportunity. The habits of loving her turn out to be hard to break, even as he hates himself for it. The love story remains central, of course

How mighty you are', he whispered quietly. 'I am grateful that our roles are not switched, for I would have dove headfirst into the Huangpu should I be left in this world without you.” All except for Roma, who immediately swiveled around and looked up, eyes searching for the source of the gunshot.Dumb book with a very predictable storyline. Common sense forgot to review in the sex/romance section that there is kissing between characters of the same sex. Unless you want your kids exposed to that, don't read this book. All in all, really not a good story. Though this story is a work of historical fiction, the “April 12 Purge” is a real event that occurred in Shanghai in 1927. Why do you think the author chose this time and setting to reimagine Romeo and Juliet? How would you remix Romeo and Juliet in contemporary times? What setting and political issues would you highlight? Share your answer. Kathleen and Benedikt were great, and I loved getting to spend some more time with them. Benedikt’s mourning for Marshall in particular was beautifully illustrated. It was also interesting to see a little more of Juliette’s main rival for the position of heir to the Scarlet gang. Better to speak none of it. Better to pretend and pretend until maybe, just maybe, there came some chance to salvage the fractured state this city had fallen into.

This is Scarlet territory.” Her words were even, but it took everything in her to keep them that way. “You forget yourself.”Juliette wanted to scream, seeing what he had been made into. She could hardly catch her breath, and she would be lying if she said it was only because of her current physical exertion.
