Description

It is well structured, clear and precises, it made me love the subject because for the first time I saw it presented for the logical wonder it is, and as an assortment of formulas to be used. I'm not sure if I'm making the topic in the right place but I'd like to have the fourth edition of Calculus (Spivak). The answer section contains solutions to about half the examples from an assortment of problems that should provided a good test of technical competence. About half of this course was devoted to algebra and topology, while the other half covered calculus, with the preliminary edition as the text.

PREFACE I hold every man a debtor to his profession, from the which as men of course doe seeke to receive countenance and profit, so ought they of duty to endeavour themselves by way of amends, to be a help and ornament thereunto. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. While commonly used in college courses, it can also be suitable for self-study with a strong foundation in algebra and trigonometry. This is a beautiful exposition of the theory of calculus from the axiomatic approach with full motivation and proof of the major theorems and some interesting facts that are seldom presented at this level. Property P2 ought to represent a distinguishing characteristic of the number 0, and it is comforting to note that we are already in a position to prove this. Frederick Gordon pointed out several serious mistakes in the original problems, and supplied some non-trivial corrections, as well as the neat proof of Theorem 12-2, which took two Lemmas and two pages in the first edition. But seriously--if you're looking for practical application or pragmatic knowledge then this book isn't exactly for you.

This arrangement corresponds to the traditional organization of most calculus courses, but I feel that it will only diminish the value of the book for students who have seen a small amount of calculus previously, and for bright students with a reasonable background. In fact, this short chapter is simply an explanation of what is meant by the “basic properties of numbers,” all of which—addition and multiplication, subtraction and division, solutions of equations and inequalities, factoring and other algebraic manipulations—are already familiar to us. They provide expert and detailed descriptions, disclose all significant defects and/or restorations, provide clear and accurate pricing, and operate with fairness and honesty during the purchase experience. The Trigonometric Functions 303 *16 7T is Irrational 324 *17 Planetary Motion 330 18 The Logarithm and Exponential Functions 19 Integration in Elementary Terms 363 Appendix. Besides limits, continuity, derivation, and integration, topics like transcendence of e, irrationality of pi, and construction of the real numbers using Dedekind cuts are beautifully covered.

Fortunately, this fact need not be listed separately, since it follows from the property Pl already listed. As a general thing - it's been a long time since I read this textbook but I have good memories of it. Derivatives and Integrals 9 Derivatives 149 10 Differentiation 168 11 Significance of the Derivative 188 Appendix. Considerable attention is paid to motivating the discussion, showing why each result is important (though mainly in the pure mathematics context, applications of calculus being mainly found in the problems at the end of each chapter). The inadequacies which preliminary editions always involve were gallantly en dured by a rugged group of freshmen in the honors mathematics course at Brandeis University during the academic year 1965-1966. Although small changes have been made to some material, especially in Chap ters 5 and 20, this edition differs mainly in the introduction of additional problems, a complete update of the Suggested Reading, and the correction of numerous er rors. Finally, there is a Suggested Reading list, to which the problems often refer, and a glossary of symbols. No matter how well particular topics may be developed, the goals of this book will be realized only if it succeeds as a whole.
