Description

Discrete mathematics is used to include theoretical computer science, which is relevant to computing. I'm not sure how the book could be reorganized nor do I see anything to be gained from reorganizing.

Discrete Mathematics with Applications - Susanna S. Epp

On today's installment of "Rating my college textbooks because if I have to read them, they better count toward my Goodreads challenge! The first block of chapters deals with formal logic, the concept of proofs, and the basic notions involving sets and functions. Georg Cantor's work marks the beginning of set theory, which is used to distinguishing between various types of infinite sets. Each section starts with “Investigate” questions that engage and encourage students to participate in a topic discussion. Some paragraphs do include lots of information and could've or should've been split into smaller more digestible chunks.

Mathematical concepts and techniques covered in the textbook will only become more relevant in applications. This book does a fine job of covering numerous topics in this area, including among several other topics, symbolic logic, counting, sets, and a short section on number theory. The study of combinatorial design will be described in the design theory, which is used to contain various subsets with certain properties of intersection.Important Notice: Media content referenced within the product description or the product text may not be available in the ebook version.

At the same time, the mathematics is not as challenging and inspirational as in most competing textbooks. A tree generally contains the non-empty finite set of elements which is known as nodes or vertices with the connected lines or edges between the nodes. The text starts with a brief but useful introduction to mathematical concepts (mathematical statements, sets and functions), and then goes on to cover a range of topics in depth, broken up into four main sections: Combinatorics, Sequences, Symbolic Logic and Proofs, and Graph Theory, as well an Additional Topics section that touches on Generating Functions and provides an introduction to Number Theory. In addition to Discrete Mathematics with Applications and Discrete Mathematics: An Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning, she is co-author of Precalculus and Discrete Mathematics, which was developed as part of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. The primary focus of this text is not to provide a rigorous mathematical foundation for Computer Science students; instead, it is targeted towards first and second year undergraduate math majors who will go on to teach middle school and high school mathematics.
