Celaena finds out the three dark creatures are actually the Valg princes, the ones who forged the three Wyrdkeys out of the Wyrdgate all those ages ago. They are surprised to see that Celaena has Goldryn, the ruby sword from the mountain cave, which belonged to Athril (Maeve’s ex-lover) and Brannon Galathynius. Celaena keeps fighting them but they nearly overpower her (and cut off her hair in the process hdu). Then, Rowan’s “friends” arrive, the five other warriors working for Maeve, but none of them help her as they race inside to help Rowan, except for Gavriel, who she saw once before. They take over from Rowan to kill all the soldiers, but then as Rowan goes outside, Celaena is swallowed by the darkness. His friends keep him from going to her because he would also go insane. The Valg love Celaena’s misery and keep her alive, going through her horrible memories over and over again.

Sorrel comes to get Manon for Asterin’s execution. She tells Manon that Asterin is going to her death “to keep your secrets.” It’s the closest she’s ever come to outright challenge or resentment.Sorscha figured that putting more iron in Dorian’s blood would keep his magic contained, because iron beats magic and all that. Celaena cannot travel to Doranelle for the answers she desires until Rowan decides she has re-mastered her gifts. During the War Games, in which each witch clan has to protect their own egg and steal the others, asshole Iskra lets her wyvern kill the wyvern of Petrah, the Bluebloods heir. The wyvern dies, but Manon and Abraxos manage to save Petrah. Manon knows she was born without a heart and soul, but she saw how Petrah’s wyvern tried to save her, and so she helped.

Rowan finds her afterwards, where she is weeping by the lake. He asks her whether she wants to talk, and proceeds after she refuses, saying to her: “I think I’ve started to figure you out, Aelin Galathynius.” After yet another brawl, Aelin goes to Rowan’s room with salve to treat the burns she unintentionally gave him, surprised to realize that she feels guilty. This leads to a heart-to-heart discussion with Rowan, where he talks about his deceased mate, Lyria. Aelin asks him how he recovered from the loss, and he says he hasn't and may never will, but that maybe they could recover together. Celaena swigged from the jug of wine—­or tried to. It was empty, which she supposed was a blessing, because gods her head was spinning. She needed water, and more teggya. And perhaps something for the gloriously painful split lip and scraped cheekbone she’d earned last night in one of the city’s tabernas.Rowan is first seen as closed off, cold, and uncaring, mostly reacting with anger and annoyance at Aelin during the first few months of their training. Later on, after discovering more about Aelin's past, Rowan warms up to Aelin and is kinder and more caring, showing worry when she is hurt or weak. Manon doesn’t want any of the humans around Abraxos, because he’s scared of them. She gets all of Abraxos’s broken teeth and spikes replaced by iron ones, like hers. The only problem is that his wings aren’t ready for flying. Sorscha treats Chaol, Dorian, Aelin, and Fleetfoot's wounds after their battle with the monster in the catacombs, though at this point, her name is still unknown to them. Dorian realizes that the witch mirror is a memory mirror and that Manon and Aelin must go together to use it. Once inside the witch mirror, Manon and Aelin discover that it holds memories. They learn the truth about what happened last time Erawan came to power and that Aelin will have to sacrifice herself to stop him. Manon offers comfort the only way she knows how by moving close to her in a show of solidarity.

Celaena tells her she wants to keep her scars as a reminder, and that she will eventually free all the slaves in the salt mines. But she can’t take her crown, because if she does, she will take apart the world. Manon is an extremely beautiful witch with alabaster skin, long, moon-white hair, and eyes the color of burnt gold. She has the distinct traits for the Ironteeth—a set of retractable iron fangs and nails.
