Adam Osidis, a dying knight from a disgraced house, must choose between joining a hopeless band of magic users in their desperate bid to free their world of the evil God, or accepting his promise to give Adam everything his heart desires. From start to finish, it layers all the threads that have been woven into a tapestry of everything from waging a war on the inherent loneliness of being alive to vanquishing the most monstrous villain there is, Self-Interest. I hope Remender can get a better handle on this in the next volume--now that things have settled down into a journey narrative, the story should be easier to follow and perhaps enough background can be filled in to make this a worthwhile endeavor. Garils Sulm, also known as the Mud King or the God of Whispers, is the terrible, admirable villain who, even in chains, leads the group. I let my girlfriend read this comic and she loved it alot, its cool to geek out with her and discuss how multi layered this story is, a story i will definitely will revisit in the future.In a back matter essay, Remender describes his approach to the book as “decompressed,” but that’s not quite accurate: Within this first volume (collecting four issues of a proposed 12, with the opportunity for more if reader demand allows), Adam Osidis confronts the Mud King, reckons with painful familial losses and joins up with a ragtag band of fellow insurgents. With his family apparently entirely dead, Osidis has partnered with his childhood friend, a winged demon named Jevalia who somehow, chillingly, succumbed to the Mud King as a child. The art was great as usual, the writing is solid, and what happens is certainly interesting but seems to get there too quickly.

I get a good feel for Adam Osidis and his family, especially his father Zeb, but the other characters, even the villain Mud King, fall by the wayside.Additionally while I usually love Rick Remender's writing, I am not really enamored with the story itself here. Is the art awesome and the story intriguing enough nonetheless to make me want to read the next volume? As a final aside, it did make me consider going back to re-read the end of Black Science again; read in conjunction with this, that ending too may be more bleak than a first glance may suggest. This is the type of story a reader starts, thinking "I don't know but I'll keep going, maybe it gets better". This volume has some great visuals in it, and its all handled masterfully by Opena and the rest of the art crew. Being my first step into Remender's work, he has definitely hooked me in and I'm sure I'll enjoy his other stories just as much. We're kind of thrown into this world and lore is dispersed a little in each issue, A "hit the ground running" instance occurs.
